The Great Unravelling: Tunisia, Egypt and the Protracted Collapse of the American Empire

02-02-2011 14:59 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Energy Crisis | Terror War | Sheffield | World

The toppling of dictator Ben Ali in Tunisia in the wake of mass protests and bloody street clashes has been widely recognized as signifying a major transformation in the future of politics and geopolitics for the major countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). There is little doubt that the Tunisian experience triggered the escalation of unprecedented protests in Egypt against the Mubarak regime. The question on every media pundit’s lips is, ‘Will events in Tunisia and Egypt have a domino effect throughout the Arab world?’

John Pilger: Floods Australia‘s ‘Katrina’ moment

When you fly over the earth’s oldest land mass, Australia, the view can be shocking.

Scars as long as European countries are the result of erosion. Salt pans shimmer where once native vegetation grew. This is almost impossible to reverse. The first to die are the most vulnerable species.

We need you help to stop shell in rossport!

24-01-2011 17:43 | Rossport Solidarity | Climate Chaos | History | Social Struggles | Liverpool | World

You will never have concent Shell!
On Thursday 20th January An Bord Pleanala announced their decision to
approve the Shell high pressure raw gas pipeline. The decision shows the
farce of project splitting, which forces authorities to pass small dangerous
sections of projects as the rest of the expensive project has already been
built. This is the last chance to resist the plan by the Irish Government,
state bodies and Shell to force their will on communities and on the country
as a whole, regardless of proper process, economic sense, people’s safety,
environmental laws and human rights. Whilst the people of Ireland are being
crippled by the cuts in public services and forced in to huge EU and IMF
debt, the great gas giveaway is the elephant in the room that could be our
solution. The unjust deal can be renegotiated as we have successfully seen
in other countries. The people of Ireland should have a say in how we
sustainably manage our natural resources. The struggle against Shell is a
struggle for everyone in Ireland. You can be part of it.

I can't forgive Mark Kennedy's betrayal of activists

11-01-2011 14:37 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Repression | Sheffield | World

Along with many others, I was sickened when I discovered that the man I knew as a fellow activist, Mark Kennedy, was in fact an undercover police officer who had been spying on us since 2003. Yet my feelings were nothing compared with those who were close to him. The betrayal and loss they are feeling is a real grief – the equivalent of someone you love dying. I went through this myself a few years ago when one of my best friends, Martin Hogbin, was exposed as a BAE spy. I denied the facts for a long time simply because the truth was too difficult. I still miss my friend, miss the good times, miss him seeing my son grow up; I don't think this feeling will ever go away.

The Machines Change, the Work Remains the Same

10-01-2011 09:52 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Energy Crisis | Sheffield | World

When I first got involved in left/radical political organizing in the 1990s, I don’t recall any of us referring to our efforts as “phone activism” or calling ourselves “fax activists.” A friend who started organizing in the early 1960s assured me that he never heard the term “mimeograph activism” in those days. We used telephones, fax machines, and mimeographs in our organizing work, but the machines didn’t define our work and we didn’t spend a lot of time arguing about the implications of using them.
