Irish SWP call Mayday organisers "Thatcher's Children"

Badman | 12.05.2004 00:44 | May Day 2004 | Globalisation | World

The Irish SWP have been caught in an embarressing slip. Within 36 hours of the biggest and most militant anti-capitalist march that the country has seen in decades, the SWP produced a leaflet which they handed out on the RTS in Dublin on Monday May 3rd. In this leaflet they denounced the libertarian organisers of the march as "Thatcher's children" for not preventing people from advancing and trying to push through police lines.

The leaflet was produced at a time when it seemed that the state backlash against the movement would be severe, but they quickly realised their mistake and have since 'disappeared' the leaflet. The denunciation was especially funny as it demanded that people should advance together or hold the line together, when the SWP actually fled long, long before the rest of the crowd.

socialist worker tricks

12.05.2004 09:59

That's why I really liked the expulsion of the Socialist Workers when they wanted to join the aeh "radical block" coming from the the prisoner solidarity march on Monday on the last metres down the hill to the Reclaim the Streets Party.

In total it seemed to me that the Socialist Workers seemed to hide behind the "radical block" and it seemed to me that they in general wanted to have others doing the work and they to claim afterwards the success/victory of the protest; it never was so clear to me than in Dublin, where they were actually a minority on the demos.

nope

it's there usual tactic

They join at the last minute when they're sure they wont get any heat and then claim the march/action/whatever a success and give the impression they organised it.

As for the leaflet - does anybody have a copy they can scan and post here?

Truth

The fact is, love them or loath them, the SWP DOES organise most things. They are the hardest working party there is.

You just have to look at their 'Marxist' festival to see how hard they work.

SWP puting in the work?!

Anti-cap I would advise you to look at the Irish wing of the SWP and look at what work they did before you spout stuff on this thread. I think you will find they organised one demonstration, in a weekend of protest, mainly organised by the Irish Grassroots Network. They made some terrible propaganda against the grassroots organisation in the final days, playing with media hype about violence, and trying to split the movement. In the organisation for the weekend itself they did nothing, they were late on the game in the first place.

er the poster above is as usual economic with the facts. The dgn repressented by aillen o carroll and Aeip represented by rory hearne were BOTH interviewed a number of times ABOUT VIOLENCE each time they rightly said their would be peaceful protest and that the states hyping of the situation would lead to the garda trying to start something.

i guess you may have been here, but if you were here for the 3 week build up your report may be more factual.

The SWP's attempt to split the movement on the old good protestor / bad protestor thing are well documented. Just coz you're a paddy mate, doesn't mean that you're not a SWP-cult-zombie.

Follow the link to irish indymedia dude, you'll find the scan waiting for you. That's if you haven't turned blue from holding your breath. Not that I'd put that past the cultees. "The leader says there is no link (hold breath) the leader says there is no link..."
