Kebele social centre in Easton, Bristol, remains (sadly) the only permanent radical volunteer run such centre in Bristol – that means no bosses and no paid staff. As we look forwards to the 11th anniversary of the founding of Kebele, we hope that readers & activists will go out and set up their own radical centre, in their part of town. Bristol needs not one, but many, long-term radical social centres, if we are to truly build an alternative to the dominance of the capitalist consumer culture and its destructive nature.
To celebrate our 11 years of dogged, often creative, activity and resistance, we’ve having a party – on 8 December. It’ll be a late one, with bands, dj’s, PA’s, cabaret, café. Full details to follow shortly.

At the gates of Eastwood Park Prison two rather embarrassed Policemen are gently trying to persuade retired School Teacher Pauline Campbell to unblock the road and allow a prison van to enter the establishment. Pauline is arguing that a recent fatality here suggests that Eastwood Park is not a safe place for women to be held and that the van should take its prisoners elsewhere. The Constables seem decidedly uncomfortable with the situation and summon a sergeant for advice. They knew about this demo in advance; Pauline staged an identical protest here last year following another apparent self-inflicted death. I can almost imagine them drawing lots back at the station to see who would answer the inevitable call. Eventually after 15 minutes of being bombarded with prison related facts and figures they lose patience a drag Pauline away to a waiting transport. This is the thirteenth time she has arrested since the death of her 18 year old daughter Sarah in Style Prison in 2003. However she is rarely charged with any offence. Most prisons are nervous about the prospect of giving Pauline a courtroom platform and the potential PR disaster it could bring.

Around fifty peace campaigners today took a walk around the perimeter fence of “RAF” Croughton, finishing with a picnic, entertainment from the Oxford Sea Green Singers and others, and speeches from Felicity Arbuthnot, John McDonnell MP and the Rev David Platt. RAF Croughton is a little known but essential component of the US communications and spy network which includes other bases on UK soil such as Menwith Hill.

START
Airborne protest at Bristol Airport against climate chaos
Following yesterdays anti-nuclear ‘reclaim power’ protests at Drax power station in Yorkshire, campaigners in Bristol today focused on Bristol Airport’s absurd plans for expansion and the harmful greenhouse emissions from air traffic, currently running at 700 million tonnes of CO2 per year in the UK.

A protest called at very short notice outside the main gates of RAF Brize Norton had the unexpected effect of closing the main gates, and possibly the entire base, to all traffic for nearly two hours. Brize Norton is one of the RAF bases reportedly being used to refuel planes delivering bombs from the US to Israel for use in the ongoing massacre of Lebanon. Meanwhile a peace camp is being established nearby to watch for further such flights. Some photos of the day are attached, and with a bit of luck a movie of the more exciting bits should materialise here later.

Peace campaigners in Swindon were in attendance at the annual “Lanterns on the Lake” event at Coate Water, to highlight the reason for the event – the anniversary of the world’s first, and hopefully last, act of nuclear warfare, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and also to publicise the protest at Brize Norton this coming Saturday. Things got a bit heated when an Israeli man and his wife took exception to the leaflets being handed out, but fortunately it ended with handshakes and good wishes.

In the last few weeks, an increasing number of horrible, very upsetting photos of the massacres committed by Israel have been coming out of Lebanon.
The alternative media are doing everything possible to break the censorship of images that was enforced by the Corporate and authoritarian State media which only show a sanitized war, disinfected images of material destruction.
The smuggling and widespread dissemination of images from The Realm of The Real that are coming out out of Lebanon and Gaza now make all of us uncomfortable. For those of us who do editing and publishing work, they bring up the awful worry of "is this appropriate?"

For a demo called with only a week’s notice, it was huge. Protestors vented their rage at the ongoing slaughter in Lebanon (and Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan) by marching from Hyde Park, past the US embassy, leaving childrens’ shoes outside Downing Street, and ending up in Parliament Square for a rally. There was a die-in and sit-down protest outside Downing Street at which a number of arrests were reported. Two protestors loudly congratulated the police outside Downing Street for their bravery in protecting the public from Tony Blair, and were not arrested. Photos, audio clips of speeches, and some video footage are attached.

Kebele breaks FREE - A new era dawns
As the Kebele Social Centre approaches it’s 11th anniversary later this year, it has already given itself an early birthday present – by paying off it’s mortgage well ahead of schedule.
Yes that’s right. Kebele has full control over its building from now on, free from the restrictions of capitalist profiteering. And you thought it was just a bunch of hippy lifestylists with dogs on strings? Think again, scratch the surface, and go beyond the perceived stereotypes. You may be surprised – at the commitment, motivation and political awareness of those involved.
In an exclusive article for Bristle magazine (see below), Kebelians have outlined their thoughts & plans for the future.

With reports of bomber activity at RAF Fairford over the last week, alongside a new law which came into force on 1st April (not an April Fools) carrying a maximum penalty of one year for trespassing on 13 designated military bases - including Fairford - the indications are that the powers that be are gearing up for new wave of military action - probably against Iran - while simultaneously ensuring that any direct dissent can be dealt with in a far more draconian and effective manner than during the protests against military bases in the lead up to the aerial bombing of Iraq from British soil in March 2003.
