More extreme weather events are being reported around the globe, killing many thousands and making millions homeless. Simon Hardy argues that capitalism, a root cause of climate change, cannot even handle the misery and suffering which results.

It was one of those things that the City Council wouldn't want to kick up a fuss about. After all, it was a bit of a controversial decision to merge the city's welfare rights department into the management of the housing benefit service back in September 2006. Employees were only told about the decision 2 or 3 days before it was implemented and were told in an email to 'keep quiet' about the issue. You can imagine people getting concerned over 'conflicts of interest' when you're supposed to get impartial and independent advice on welfare rights from people in the very same office as those authorizing the actual applications.

Employees acting on behalf of UK luxury supermarket outfit Marks & Spencer last night carried out an audacious waste-recovery operation on a party of food-waste 'Recyclists'.

On Saturday 30 June at 12 noon, The Nottingham Congolese Community assembed to demonstrated against continued deportations. Starting from The Old Market Square, they marched through Nottingham, past the railway station and continued through the Meadows Queens Walk to the Meadows Park near the embankment.

Women representatives from the Six Nations on the Grand River community in Ontario, Canada gave a talk at the Sumac Centre, Forest Fields, Nottingham on Wednesday the 27th of June at 7.30 pm.

They spoke about the experience of reclaiming and defending a piece of land from development. Their action has been incredibly successful, having prevented the development and protected the land from an armed police incursion.

'The Case for Open Borders' - A Refugee Week event speaker.
Teresa Hayter (member of the Close Campsfield Campaign and an author of the No One is Illegal Manifesto) gave a thought provoking talk to a well-attended meeting at the Refugee Forum's Square Centre on the evening of 19th June.

The BNP have been organising in Nottinghamshire, resulting in the recent election of Sadie Graham onto Broxtowe Council. In order to strengthen anti-fascist activity in Nottingham a meeting to discuss anti-fascist campaigning will take place on 20th June at the Sumac Centre.

Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill [NAIL]

There has been a large campaign, with much support over recent times. A planning application to extend the operation of the Eastcroft Incinerator in Nottingham was denied. WRG, the operators of the plant, appealed. This process has now been stopped and a new application has been lodged.

Now, folks have to go round again.

Asda in Hyson Green have put in a planning application to expand the shop building into their car park off Noel St. We think this greedy company has done enough harm to the area as it is.

No Borders Nottingham held up its end of a National Day of Action for Refugees with a stall in the Market Square accompanied by the No Borders banner, today sharing the Square with the Farmers’ Market and a City Council awareness day for Fostering of children.
