The Corporate Academy and the George Fox 6

On Monday 26th September, the trial of the George Fox 6 commences at Lancaster Magistrates Court. Six student activists face charges in a three day arising out of an action that took place at Lancaster University in September 2004 where protestors had gone into the George Fox building at the university to hand out leaflets and talk to people at the "Corporate Venturing" Conference - a networking meeting for multinational corporations. Speakers at the conference were drawn from controversial arms manufacturer BAE Systems, Shell and other companies the six say have 'long histories of human rights abuses and environmental destruction'. Police attended and told the protestors they were doing nothing wrong, but some months later they received summonses through the post. The defendants are seeking support at the trial.

Save Spodden Valley campaigners have been invited to speak this month at an asbestos conference in the European Parliament buildings. Whilst in Brussels, campaigners are also taking the opportunity to meet with MEPs and European Commissioners to discuss the controversial planning application to build over 600 homes and a children’s nursery on the site of what was the world’s largest asbestos textile factory at Rochdale in the north west of England. BBC TV North West Tonight investigates the controversial Spodden Valley planning application.

Were Councillors and the BBC misled over asbestos test results?

Jayne Barrett of BBC North West Tonight reports that residents in Rochdale are today calling on the office of Deputy Prime Minister to for a Public Inquiry because they suggest that developers have seriously misled town councillors and the BBC over important facts about asbestos contamination.

This concerns the former Turner and Newall site in Spodden Valley, Rochdale where there are controversial plans by a consortium, headed by Countryside Properties, to build over 600 homes and a children’s nursery on the site of the world’s largest asbestos textile factory
