From SPAIN- The scheduled referendum to withdraw Catalan from Spain continues to raise hackles in Madrid, and has interesting parallels with the Scottish referendum to withdraw from the UK. Tens of thousands of Spaniards continue to demonstrate against the government's abortion reform.
From CUBA- El Salvador had a presidential election last weekend. Fighting continues in the Central African Republic with Christian armed men, backed by French troops, attacking Muslim rebels. US Marines could be stationed on the African continent as part of a global realignment, as part of US Africa Command.
From GERMANY- The German Cabinet has recommended that German troops have extended deployment in Afghanistan and increase troops in Mali, where half of the population is under the age of 15. Former German Chancellor Schroeder had his phone tapped by the NSA in 2002 because he opposed the US invasion of Iraq. The EU passed new laws and jail sentences for financial fraud, while Germany is going after citizens who use offshore accounts to avoid taxes. Financial corruption is being investigated in the EU. Germany has raised the possibility of sanctions against the Ukraine leadership to speed up resolving the political crisis, and urged the UK to remain in the EU.
From JAPAN- Japanese Prime Minister Abe says that the constitution can be interpreted to allow the creation of self-defense forces. A report on the anti-government protests in Thailand. Thousands of demonstrators marched through Moscow in sub-zero temperatures to protest human rights in their country.
From RUSSIA- An interview with American journalist Harvey Wassermann on the impact of the radiation leaks from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
