Thorn bits are used to control horses and iron ankush to handle elephants but both these animal abusers equipments are being challenged by the Indian chapter of International Organisation for Animal Protection.
The Rajasthan High Court has issued the notice to the chief secretary, Central animal welfare board and Central environment and forest minister asking that why a thorny bridle is used to control the horses. The orders were passed by the bench of justice Ajay Rastogi and justice JJ Ranka while in the preliminary hearing of the petition filed by the International Organisation for Animal Protection - OIPA chapter in India, In the petition advocate Neeraj Khanna told the court that in order to control the horses a thorny bridle is put on the nose of the animal. When the rider pulls the bridle animal has to go through a lot of pain and eventually suffers from wounds on their tongue and throat. Due to the bridle the mouth of the house always remains opened which increase the change of infection in the wounds. When the bridle is pulled the horse suffers pain and raises its head due to which it cannot see the objects and it increase the change of accident.
Advocate informed that when wounds get out of control the horses are sent to slaughter houses to end their life. Using thorny whip is against section 3 and 11 of animal cruelty act 1960. In a similar order HC in 2010 had already banned the use of iron sticks to control the elephants. Instead of iron stick court had ordered the use of wooden sticks. Abhishek Kadyan, Media Adviser to OIPA - Indian People for Animals moved this PIL and Miss Sukanya Kadyan, Programme Director managed online petition, which was endorsed by more than 4500 people all around Universe, Ms. Virginie Devigne Vimala and Naresh Kadyan, founder Chairman, People for Animals (PFA) Haryana, rep. of United Nation affiliated OIPA in India advised Abhishek Kadyan time to time because Iron ankush was banned on the PIL moved by Naresh Kadyan during Cartier elephant polo in Jaipur during 2006.
