Indymedia Ireland editor child porn conviction raises spying concerns

Joe McIvor | 21.11.2013 14:15 | Indymedia | London | World

Indymedia ireland editor Patrick Corcoran, resigned a week ago after he was convicted on child pornography possession charges . The collective issued a statement last week the full content of which can be read at the link below .There have been concerns expressed on the site about current editors downplaying the incident .

Despite having admitted to possession of thousands of child pornography images in 2009 ,Patrick Corocran's case inexplicably took four years to be brought to trial , where he went up before Judge Nolan - reportedly a former policeman - and given a suspended sentence. Over those past four years Corcoran became an indymedia editor -he had been involved with the site for many years previously .He told editors that he had been sacked from his civil service job because he had been editing for the indymedia site while at work .

Corcoran has been an activist with Animal rights groups, and a prominent Anti-Fascist Action volunteer . He was (or at least people thought he was )a prominent feminist and perhaps the fiercest defender of womens' rights in Ireland over the years a supporter of Shell to Sea and many other worthy causes . Since its founding Corcoran has been the most vocal supporter of the anti-Iranian Hands Off the People of Iran group in Ireland (HOPIeire).

You weren't being clear enough, Joe

21.11.2013 14:23

I know what Joe means by inference. But he should have made clear what he was talking about.

If "they" have any hold over you, know of some illegal, immoral, etc. activity of yours, "they" are in a position to blackmail you into being an agent.

Notice that this does not mean that has happened.

The real issue.

21.11.2013 14:42

The real issue is that he enjoyed photos of children sexually.

Think of the children being abused and not your little infighting world.

has anyone thought of asking him where the photos came from and where the children are who are being abused.

The Question.

Too right. It is not a victimless crime....

21.11.2013 15:49

..and those responsible for amassing massive collections of this vils shit should be treated with the upmost contempt...

inference

21.11.2013 17:49

It was my intention to raise in people's minds the distinct possibility that this is another case of a powerful state using a compromised individual to spy on its perceived enemies. It is certainly my view that Corcoran has been a tout for a long time , but the Indymedia ireland collective does not share my concern . One editor wrote today about my opinion that Corcoran was working for the cops- something that virtually everybody else in Ireland thinks btw : "I have already considered the possibility and discounted it".

Please confirm 'editors'

22.11.2013 08:25

Please can someone from Indy Ireland confirm whether the do have 'editors' as the writer repeatedly asserts or whether this is simply a misunderstanding. As a long term user and contributor to Indy I always undertsood that Indy had 'moderators' and its very objective would be denied by having 'editors'
I do not mean to distract from the main issue in this article but I do think this is an important issue.

moderator is correct I believe

22.11.2013 09:37

I think the official designation is "moderator".People use the word "editor" as a synonym sometimes , perhaps wrongly . Sorry for any confusion .

Children

23.11.2013 11:37

I think that it should be remembered that 'child pornography' is the real issue of this.

Concerned

issue

23.11.2013 15:04

If authorities who claim to be protecting children are colluding with child abusers for whatever reason, that is an issue as well . Child abuse was the issue in Ireland's church-run industrial schools and orphanages for decades . But when the children grew up , got together and demanded that their abuse be recognized and investigated, they found that there was a concerted and systematic effort by church and state authorities to cover up for the abusers - this cover-up is ongoing . You'll never be able to deal with the issue of child abuse until you begin to recognize and deal with those that cover-up for it .

C'mon?

25.11.2013 07:19

Rather than in fighting about what a 'moderator' or 'editor' means how about someone speaks to him and finds out where he was getting this material from?

The REAL issue here is that children are abused and often raped for these people to enjoy and masturbate over. (harsh but true).

Some of the photos and films may have come directly from the originator.

THIS IS THE ISSUE.

Not arguments about wording or conspiracy in government.

For once let this forum do some good.

The Question.

Seriously?

25.11.2013 13:19

I take it the last message is from the person in question or a friend?

Get a grip.

The Question.

Crime or witch hunt ?

26.11.2013 01:17

As distasteful as it is, watching a crime on video is not a crime in it's self, as watching it in it's self, has not victim. It can only be a crime if he has aided or abetted it in some way, for example paid for, or otherwise promoted it.

I'm not into kiddy porn but I do like watching videos of robberies and car chases on youtube. Is just watching that a crime ?

But when it comes to kiddy fiddling, our emotions take the place of reason.

I'm certainly not defending watching child abuse, but it really is important to make a specific connection to the victim of a crime in general, because otherwise it becomes easy to "criminalise" things which don't have a victim.

@anon what a stupid argument!

If nobody watched this vile shit it would not be put out there for people to watch. You sound lie a pedophile enabler!!
