Syria Film Screening and Planning Meeting

Date: Wednesday 13th November 2013
Venue: London Action Resource Centre, 62 Fieldgate Street (corner of Parfett St), Whitechapel, London E1 1ES
Map:  http://tinyurl.com/lcoppur

You are warmly invited to attend a free screening of two short documentaries and a discussion about the Syria crisis. This will be followed by a meeting to continue planning actions to support the movement for peace and justice in Syria.

Film screening:

Doors open: 6:20pm. Film starts at 6:45pm.

What goes on in those 30 second clips of shelling seen on the evening news? To help us understand this question, there will be a screening of two short documentaries that illuminate the realities of the Syrian crisis as experienced by Syrian people themselves.

The first film will be Olly Lamberts' 30 minute film 'The Bombing of al-Bara,' which captures the ghastly reality of the immediate aftermath of Syrian government jets attacking civilian neighbourhoods in the village of al-Bara. This film illustrates the insanity of war by documenting the devastating effects of aerial bombardment on human beings (a method being used not just in Syria but around the world - Gaza, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc.)

The second film will be Wael Kadlo's recent short film (8 mins) 'The Wound' (Bidayyat, 2013). This takes us into the situation of a Syrian woman risking her life to treat those wounded in the Syrian conflict.

Planning meeting: This will take place straight after the films and discussion, from 8-9.30pm.

The film screening is free, but a donation towards the maintenance costs of the LARC would be welcome.

What's really happening in Syria?
A eyewitness report from Ewa Jasiewicz
Meeting 7.30pm Monday 11th November
Rumi's Cave, 26 Willesden Lane Kilburn NW6 7ST

Although Western military intervention in Syria has been prevented, at least for the time being, the fighting and killing continue. While the anti-war movement is united in opposing such intervention, there are competing accounts of what is happening on the ground. Was there a genuine revolutionary uprising that could be regarded as part of the Arab Spring? If so, was it hijacked by western powers or extremists with sectarian agendas? What will be the effect of the destruction of chemical weapons on the conflict? What can be done to stop the killing and to help the Syrian people?

Ewa Jasiewicz, who has lived and campaigned in both Iraq and Gaza and was recently in Syria meeting civil society organisations, will lead off a discussion on current developments.

Also, for the first time, members of the weekly discussion group Disseminus will join our discussion so it should be an interesting meeting.
The discussion will be followed by our monthly business meeting where we plan our activities - ALL WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE.
