WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been arrested by British police over sexual assault claims in Sweden, it is now being reported on Sky News and other media outlets.
According to their "sources", officers from Scotland Yard detained the 39-year-old Australian at around 9.30am today. He will appear before City of Westminster magistrates before a decision is made about whether he should be extradited.
Clearly, his lawyers will fight any attempt for him to be extradited to Sweden as they are concerned he would then be passed on to US authorities. This morning, his legal representatives were telling the BBC that his human rights were being violated as he had not yet seen the charges against him in English.
Who will be happy at this news? The US government, no doubt. Oh – and the tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists who have filled Indymedia with stuff attacking Assange over the past eight days and accusing him of being a CIA asset. (Global Research, hang your heads in shame.)
