All across Northern Mexico businesses and people alike are being extorted to pay “multas’ or fees to the criminal elements that run rapid through the country. Families are being carjacked and their vehicles taken, a 21-year old college student lays dead on the ground a victim of collateral damage as gun fire is sprayed into an innocent crowd.
Narco’s are taking ranches from family ranchers to use to produce and store their drugs and this added to the already weak world economy pushed one man to say enough was enough.
77 year old Don Alejo Garza was given the same ultimatum by the drug cartel as was given to other ranchers. He was told to leave his ranch that it now belonged to the drug cartel for their use the difference this time around was Don Alejo wasn’t just any average welcome mat that could be easily walked over.
Sending his ranch workers home for their own safety they assumed he would be shortly behind them and leaving soon himself but he had other plans.
As an avid hunter and gun owner Don Alejo strategically placed rifles near the windows of his ranch home and when the narcos returned to claim what they thought was another easy cache they were surprised when they themselves became the target.
Waiting on their arrival Don Alejo sat quietly alone in his home and at first sight of the bad guys opened up fire shooting several of them. Within a matter of a few moments a loud volley of gun fire was exchanged and four bad guys lay dead on Don Alejo’s front yard and two more were seriously injured.
The gun battle was so fierce and loud that it attracted unwanted attention and the fear of the military arrival caused the narcos to cut their losses and run leaving the bodies of their fallen men behind in the dirt.
When the military authorities arrived on the scene they recovered the 6 bodies in the yard and unfortunately then shortly thereafter discovered the fallen remains of Don Alejo Garza inside his home.
It was clear that Don Alejo believed in standing up and defending what was rightfully his and even though in the process of doing so lost his life the story of his courageous stance against the enemy has now endured him in becoming a national hero and a prominent folklore legend which is sure to live on for generations.
His story is one of many such similar stories that are cropping up throughout Mexico of average simple citizens standing up to corruption crime and extortion and even when outnumbered and the tables stacked against them are they are rising up. In these dark hours of Mexico’s war on drugs with such a high death toll Don Alejo Garza in his own death has become a light of hope to many and an shining example of how sometimes death in doing what is right is truly honorable.
I look forward to celebrating Don Alejo Garza day as it should become a national holiday and reminder of the need for citizens to have guns for the protection of themselves and their families from any form of tyranny or oppression.
