Are we in the UK all equal or are some more equal than others?

John O | 07.01.2010 08:42 | Migration | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | World

Do you think, those seeking/refused asylum, those without papers and those destitute in the UK, have 'Equality & Human Rights' comparable with UK Nationals?

A chance to make your views known ~ don't pass it up

Call for Evidence: We want to know what it feels like to experience discrimination and how it affects peoples’ lives. It is this sort of feedback - real life examples and illustrations - that we would like to get from this Call for Evidence.

(This message from Equality and Human Rights Commission)

Equality and Human Rights Commission: Our job is to promote equality and human rights, and to create a fairer Britain. We do this by providing advice and guidance, working to implement an effective legislative framework and raising awareness of your rights.

Triennial Review: Every three years, the Commission must publish a report that demonstrates how far society is making progress in equality, good relations and human rights. The aim of the 'Triennial Review' is to highlight critical issues that society is currently facing, which will help set our agenda for future work.

Collecting evidence for the Triennial Review: We are collecting evidence for the Review in a number of ways - including research done by universities, other partner organisations and through our own research.

We also want to know what it feels like to experience discrimination and how it affects peoples’ lives.

It is this sort of evidence – real life examples and illustrations – that we would like to get from this first 'call for evidence'.

The deadline for submission is 29 January 2010

Making a submission
We have written some questions which you might like to use to help you provide us with the information we need.

The core questions are:
1.What are the most significant challenges or inequalities faced by the people you work with in the areas of health, employment, education, criminal justice and quality of life? (don't have to answer all)

2. Can you give examples of case studies that demonstrate the challenges or inequalities you have identified above?

3. Can you give examples of severe problems experienced by those facing multiple inequalities?

4. Do the challenges or inequalities worsen at a particular point in life? (eg early years, older care, starting a family, starting work)

5. Can you tell us about any solutions you have found or heard about which tackle these challenges?

6. Can you tell us about any particular issues that create tensions between you or the people you work with and other groups?

7. Is there any other information you feel we should be aware of that may not fit these categories?
