Mass Arrest On Climate Demo in Copenhagen

fil kaler | 12.12.2009 20:06 | COP15 Climate Summit 2009 | Climate Chaos | World

Around 700 - 900 people were arrested on a mass climate demo this afternoon in Copenhagen

At around 3.15pm Danish police charged into the march, cutting off hundreds of people, including many who were marching as part of Libertarian Socialist bloc. By 5pm several hundred had been handcuffed and made to sit on the floor, where they remained in the cold for hours. The police's press office reports that those arrested today are between 700-900 people - See

i think its unfair to suggest people weren't fighting back...but when you are being DETAINED FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN BECAUSE THE POLICE DONT LIKE WHAT YOU THINK, AND YOU ARE JUST MARCHING, then why fight back? that will only give them evidence against you. new laws rushed through in denmark LITERALLY THIS WEEK allow the police to do this as a "preventative" arrest strategy.

blac bloc will get revenge later this week , i hope. this is still early days for the summit protests....just wait and see. (also, it is reported on indymedia dk that blac bloc were fighting back with stones and fireworks)

see indymedia denmark for more info and photos......

solidarity with those arrested.....

Fighting Back

12.12.2009 21:58

The march was not made up of lots of radicals or people ready to fight back. Most of the groups present were big NGOs etc who most likely would not show solidarity with those arrested, even if they were also memebers of NGOs. Will be interesting to see what these groups say about what has happened in the next day or so....

Radicalisation

14.12.2009 13:22

If you're right, and most of the arrestees were liberals from NGO's then hopefully seeing the police repression in action might radicalise them, and realise that anarchist black blockers have a point. Anarchists in Copenhagen (sadly not me) should use this as a platform for getting out radical politics out to those who haven't yet discovered them in Copenhagen.

A Few Notes

29.12.2009 17:35

Many people have a new view of the police after having been made to endure this, probably all 968 of the people arrested that day. Unfortunately I can see why groups such as the Young Socialists and Climate Justice would want to keep their names away from any kind of support for black bloc actions. Some windows were broken at the stock exchange and the foreign office near the beginning of the march, then fireworks were lit off at police and their vans while people had time to change, escape or block up again. The bloc was maybe 100-200 strong (? hard to tell, y'all look the same, heh), but over 700 people were forced to sit on the streets like that before being hauled off to jail.

A few things worth mentioning:
Not all black bloc members are anarchists.
Not all anarchists were with the bloc, in fact many of them were further up and had no idea that their comrades had been arrested til hours later.
That week activists inside the jail broke the doors open with benches.
And many cars were burning in Copenhagen.
