In Memory Aleksey Baranovsky facing deportation, took his own life
Inmate 'in self-harming protest'
A Ukrainian man who died while on suicide watch in jail was self-harming in protest at his impending deportation, an inquest has heard. Aleksey Baranovsky, 33, died at HMP Rye Hill, Warwickshire, in June 2006. Mr Baranovsky had been eligible for parole but was due to be deported upon his release, the inquest was told. Tom Osbourne, HM Assistant Deputy Coroner for Northamptonshire, said he did not want to go to the Ukraine as he thought his life would be in danger. As a sort of protest against deportation, he started to self-harm by cutting himself and thereafter picking at the scabs, and was bleeding as a result. Mr Baranovsky, who was serving a seven-year sentence, was placed under suicide and self-harm watch in April 2006 and was confirmed dead on 10 June 2006.
