Echoing Tony Blair’s notorious September 2002 speech on “Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction which could be activated within 45 minutes”, the new Israeli ambassador to US asserted on July 4th that an Iranian nuclear bomb “could literally wipe Israel off the map in a matter of seconds”.
The list of links at the end of the compilation below show how a relentless US and Israeli war propaganda has been building up since Obama’s “historic” speech in Prague in April.

excerpt from: ‘Iran nuke could wipe Israel off map in seconds’
Haaretz, 4 July 2009
Michael Oren, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, on Friday warned that an Iranian atomic bomb could “wipe Israel off the map in a matter of seconds,” and that the Iranians could “accomplish in a matter of seconds what they denied Hitler did, and kill 6 million Jews, literally.”
Oren made his comments in a conversation with journalist Jeffrey Goldberg at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado.
The newly appointed ambassador warned, “There are clocks ticking all around,” with regard to the Iranian nuclear issue. “One of those clocks is the uranium enrichment clock, which will show that by a certain date the Iranians will have sufficient, highly enriched uranium materials to create a bomb that could literally wipe Israel off the map in a matter of seconds.”

excerpts from: IAF to train overseas for Iran strike op
by Yaakov Katz and AP, Jerusalem Post, 5 July 2009
[…] The Jerusalem Post learned that the IAF [Israeli Air Force] plans to participate in aerial exercises in the US and Europe in the coming months with the aim of training its pilots for long-range flights. […]
IAF planes will take part this year in a joint aerial exercise with a NATO-member state that cannot be identified.
In addition, later this month, the air force will send F-16C fighter jets to participate in the Red Flag exercise at the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. At the same time, several of the IAF’s C-130 Hercules transport aircraft will participate in the Rodeo 2009 competition at the McChord Air Force Base in Washington state.
Defense officials said the overseas exercises would be used to drill long-range manoeuvres. […] Israel has a number of defense pacts with countries under which the air force is allowed to fly in foreign airspace. […]
Last summer, more than 100 IAF jets flew over Greece in what was viewed as a test-run for a potential strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. […]
In May [this year], the French newsweekly L’Express reported that the IAF had staged military exercises over Gibraltar […] [in which] 83 jets drilled live bombing runs under a simulated surface-to-air threat environment.

It's a good job they don't have one (yet)
When they do get one and wipe Israel off the map they can blame it on the BBC.
"The BBC did it get photographs" I can hear the Iranian government say.

“Wiped Off The Map” – The Rumor of the Century

excerpts from: “Wiped Off The Map” – The Rumor of the Century
by Arash Norouzi, Global Research, 20 January 2007
Across the world, a dangerous rumor has spread that could have catastrophic implications. According to legend, Iran’s President has threatened to destroy Israel, or, to quote the misquote, “Israel must be wiped off the map”. Contrary to popular belief, this statement was never made, as the following article will prove.
[...]
THE ACTUAL QUOTE:
So what did Ahmadinejad actually say? To quote his exact words in farsi:
“Imam ghoft een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad.”
That passage will mean nothing to most people, but one word might ring a bell: rezhim-e. It is the word “Regime”, pronounced just like the English word with an extra “eh” sound at the end. Ahmadinejad did not refer to Israel the country or Israel the land mass, but the Israeli regime. This is a vastly significant distinction, as one cannot wipe a regime off the map. Ahmadinejad does not even refer to Israel by name, he instead uses the specific phrase “rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods” (regime occupying Jerusalem).
So this raises the question.. what exactly did he want “wiped from the map”? The answer is: nothing. That’s because the word “map” was never used. The Persian word for map, “nagsheh”, is not contained anywhere in his original farsi quote, or, for that matter, anywhere in his entire speech. Nor was the western phrase “wipe out” ever said. Yet we are led to believe that Iran’s President threatened to “wipe Israel off the map”, despite never having uttered the words “map”, “wipe out” or even “Israel”.
THE PROOF:
The full quote translated directly to English:
“The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time”.
Word by word translation:
Imam (Khomeini) ghoft (said) een (this) rezhim-e (regime) ishghalgar-e (occupying) qods (Jerusalem) bayad (must) az safheh-ye ruzgar (from page of time) mahv shavad (vanish from).

'vanish from the page of time'

The difference between this and being 'wiped off the map' seem exceedingly small. And to use a phrase that is so capable of misinterpretation is either crass or deliberate.

The difference between 'vanish from' and 'to be wiped off' is pretty obvious for any linguist.
The first indicates no agent, thus Israel vanishes for no specified reason by no specified action/agent, whereas 'wipe' is passive tense and hints that something fatal will be done to Israel.
The first is a vague concept, the second is a clear threat. The first one connotes nothing sinister but the passing of a country into history (which happens a lot) and the second connotes it happening by force.
It's the same difference between me saying my 'my grandfather is gone' and 'my grandfather was murdered'. The first is ambiguous and unalarming and the second is unambiguous and disturbing.

I thiink the semantic difference could be described as disingenuous' People often accuse the BNP of using 'dogwhistle' language - that is, although they don't spell out their policies in full, sufficiently strong hints, usually wrapped in coded language', are made so that people know exactly what they mean.
'Vanishing from the pages of time' isn't a dogwhistle; it's a foghorn.

You point would be fair, if you could find contextual points that amount to a veiled or constructive threat. Can you?
Otherwise, you are stuck with ambiguity; you have nothing at all conclusive to say. Just like no one else has.
Otherwise, your assumption of 'annihilation' is no more tenable than my assumption that what is meant is 'the coming to pass of a failed nation state through natural wastage'.
Apart from that, Afterdinnerjazz is demagogue/populist/puppet. Sure he has a track record of verbally antagonising Israel, but nothing more. He doesn't really have the power to launch any attacks on Israel. Iran has no nuclear weapons, and there is no evidence they are developing any... unlike, erm, Israel and the USA and the UK.
I'm more scared of nuclear weapons than I am of scumbag politicians' rhetoric. You?
Israel the failing state who is hanging onto the lifeline of a failing US empire, sitting on a pile of nukes. Iran, a country who has never waged a war- but has won a US-backed war.
Who is the bigger threat here?
Linguisticer than thou!

Iran currently does not have a nuclear weapon, but to re-use a word, it would be ingenuous to think they weren't very busy developing one.
Israel a 'failed state'? Under what criterion?
