Student Delegation from Palestine arrives in Brighton

Sussex Al Quds Twinning Project | 20.04.2009 09:46 | Palestine | South Coast | World

PRESS RELEASE
Sussex-Al-Quds Twinning Project welcomes latest student delegation from Palestine.

On the 20th April a delegation of two Palestinian students arrives in the UK to continue the work of the Sussex-Al-Quds Tubas University Twinning Project. The delegation has been organised by students at both universities, in cooperation with the local Brighton Tubas Friendship and Solidarity Group.

During their ten day visit, this latest delegation will be working to formalise and consolidate the twinning agreement, as well as speaking to students at Sussex University about student life under military occupation. The Sussex-Al-Quds Twinning Project hopes to foster further communication and friendship between the students of Sussex University and Tubas, particularly following the mass wave of student occupations in solidarity with the people of Palestine during the Israeli bombing of Gaza in January 2009.

Background
The University of Sussex has been twinned with Al-Quds Open University in Tubas since May 2007.

The Brighton Tubas Friendship and Solidarity Group has been working to establish links between the people of Brighton and Tubas since early 2006, a process which has led to a series of delegations to occupied Palestine and to Brighton and the UK. Tubas is located in the Jordan Valley, a highly fertile and agriculturally valuable area of the West Bank which has been under occupation since 1967, and which the Israeli government is attempting to annex through illegal settlements.

In its work to help support those living under occupation, the Brighton Tubas Friendship and Solidarity Group works with several Palestinian groups, including the Red Crescent, a Women’s Group, Prisoner Society, Agricultural Co ops, and Al-Quds Open University. In the UK, the Group has also created links with many organisations based in Brighton, including Amnesty International, the Quakers, Sussex Action for Peace, Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Muslim Women’s Group, Unison, Sussex University Students Union and Palestine Society, Students at Brighton University and Brighton Arabic School.
