U.N. to Probe War-Crimes by Israel

kl | 30.01.2009 02:57 | Palestine | World

The UN secretary-general has announced an investigation into alleged violations of humanitarian law during Israel's 22-day assault on Gaza.

Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday that he was angered by the "unacceptable" Israeli attacks on UN compounds that left 44 civilians dead and several others injured.

"Over the past several weeks, unacceptable and terrible situations have taken place against the civilian people and against particularly the United Nations compounds, where many civilians were sheltered," he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

UN officials say they have evidence that white phosphorous was used in an attack on the UN's main building in Gaza.

Spain opens case on Israelis

30.01.2009 10:02

The seven-page document, released yesterday, says Israel launched an airstrike to kill Salah Shehadeh, a leader of the militant Islamist Hamas group, on July 22 2002. The attack killed 14 Palestinians, including Shehadeh, and wounded 150 more, including children.

Judge Andreu argues that the attack could constitute a "crime against humanity", which allows for Spanish jurisdiction even if both the victims and perpetrators are not Spanish citizens.

European courts have repeatedly tried to make Israeli leaders stand trial for alleged war crimes. So far, none has been successful.

Pointless

My money is on the Spanish action having more impact, since the USA will just veto any UNSC resolutions against Israel.

So, it must worry Israel as much as it would if I were to send them a letter declaring war on them.
