Israel's air force fired around 30 missiles at Palestinian targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday at noon.
Live video broadcasts showed dozens of injured and dead Palestinians in Gaza City, many of them screaming, while Palestinian ambulances raced to the scene.
Others were running in the streets as one correspondent noted that the airstrikes amounted to the largest Israeli military operation in Gaza "for decades."
A Reuters correspondent who witnessed the attacks said Israeli fighter jets targeted the Gaza City port and de facto government-run buildings.
A spokesperson for the Israeli military had no immediate comment on the airstrikes.

Just use far more superior weapons against a weak enemy. Hoping that does the trick, to solve a long-running feud! Pemier division weaponised nation blitzing a tiny non-league enclave. Bit like a tip-top UK football club thrashing a primary school football team, eh? So will it all end? Mmmm?

If Israel won't seek a two state solution to the misery they have co-sponsored for so many years then perhaps they should be forced to with international sanctions. Its Israel thats the formally organised state...its Israel that has international standing on the international stage, so it should be Israel that is forced to explain to the world why this region has been in a constant state of war for 60 years. It should be Israel that are forced to explain why this conflict has spilled over into peace loving nations elsewhere in the world (obviously that doesn't include America) and why they have failed to ensure that the region remains stable.
After 60 years of brutal conflict its time for us all to wake up and formally bring an end to the idea that Israel needs still to be baby-sat.
If Israel has no answer then the more "experienced" nations of the world should come together and force the issue. Surely all it will take to put the wind up everybody is to have a few aircraft carriers hovering off the coast carrying out highly visible excercises, you know the sort of thing...paratroopers falling out of the sky on parachutes wearing skull-caps.
Lets face it we in Britain f****d up Iraq and Afghanistan so this would be an excellent opportunity to make the world right again...no?
P.S before any "foot-diaspora" come along I'll call myself an anti-semite...see, I know what your thinking before you even think it!!!!!

Our government (the British Government) has not condemned this, even though they released a statement on Christmas day condemning the alternative Christmas speech! They are culpable for this atrocities and have been in collusion with Israel over the siege on Gaza. Enough is enough we must bring our government to answer and we must stop their continued support of Israel.

The EU or the USA should show down the Isreali's,take troops out of Arghanistan& Iraq to do this, if Hamas & Isreal continue to fight it could get alot worse, boycotting helps too& NVDA by citizens.
To really solve these situations though we need social & economic direct democracy & that involves a revolution to benefit all people.

8 years of rocket attacks targetted at civilians is more than any country should have to bear, Any other country would have attacked long ago. Israel has put up with this by far too long.
Gaza is an Iranian backed hotbed where Al Quaeda is also increasing its influence. Hardly thesort of people with whom peace can be made.
Now of course, Israel wants peace and will alsways make peace with a willing partner, as was done with Egypt and Jordan. With whom should Israel now make peace? Haniyeh? Bin Laden? Nasrallah?
of course nobody on this site objected when a rocket hit a nursery in Sderot recently. An action which anybody should consider abhorrent; but when Israel targets those responsible, it is somehow unacceptable. How duplicitous!
