Animal Rights Cambridge joined with people from across the world in commemoration of International Animal Rights Day. The group held a candle lit vigil in Cambridge city centre on 10th Dec for the millions of animals world-wide that are exploited at human hands.

The International Day calls for the recognition of the basic rights of animals via a ‘Universal Declaration of Animal Rights’. Groups representing hundreds of people across the world have signed the declaration. The Declaration also has some note worthy individual signatories: Joanna Lumley; Hayley Mills; Benjamin Zephaniah; Michael Mansfield QC; Miriam Margoyles; Uri Geller; Carol Royle; Amanda Royle and David Shepherd OBE have all signed up in support.

According to an Animal Rights Cambridge spokesperson “The day coincides with the anniversary of the ratification of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, we feel that animal and human rights are linked, there is a proven association between cruelty to animals and violence against people. Like Martin Luther King said ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ ”.

The spokesperson said “People from many different walks of life support animal rights and are animal rights campaigners. Rich and poor, black and white, students and childcare professionals - compassionate people from all walks of life support the right of all beings to live without the fear of torture and abuse.

International Animal Rights Day Protest

10.12.2008 22:46

Animal Rights campaigners from North Wales and surrounding areas joined forces for International Animal Rights Day and paid visits to two areas of concern. The first was to the constituency office of David Jones MP for Clywd West, in Colwyn Bay. This MP has made it clear he approves of hunting and will vote to repeal the ban should the Tories gain power. 15 Protesters paid him a visit and informed his constituents of his views regarding this barbaric pastime.. We will be sure to let all his constituents know of his views so they can make an informed choice about who to vote for. With 73% of the public wanting the ban to remain and David Jones only gaining his seat last time by 133 votes, the future does not look too bright for pro hunt supporter David!!

So good to see everyone out for the animals no matter where it is or how many where there, the thoughts and the publicity it gains are important. Well done to Cambridge AR and everyone else who did and are doing demo's for IARD
