Camden Drugs & Alchohol services face the axe to make way for animal lab.

London Against Camden Danger Lab Arts Collective - Mandy Ford & Steven Brennan | 01.12.2008 19:19 | Animal Liberation | Bio-technology | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

The Margarete Centre at 108 Hampstead Road provides prescribing and dispensary services to many of Camden's 4,200 class A drug addicts. The centre also porivides counselling and harm reduction advice at "NIDS" and Primary Care. This centre faces the chop to make way for one of the "28 Days Later" animal testing labs / virus containment facilities planned for Camden.

Last year residents held meetings with Camden councillers, MPs, residents, local business people etc in opposition to the proposed virus containment facilities and animal testing labs planned for Camden dubbed the "28 Days Later" labs by the press following safety warnings from MI6, MI5 and the embarassing fact that the consortium behind the labs, one of which will be a few footsteps away from St Pancras International / Eurostar forgot to consult or inform British Transport Police {we know most people don't like "going to the cops"...but we are a little surprised at the MRC led consortium behaving like street drug dealers...; ) }....

Follow up meetings have taken place throughout the year with the Somers Town Peoples Forum campaigning for council homes to be built on the sites in Camden where 15,000 people on a housing waiting list.

While many people are aware of the plans to build a massive "superlab" in Somers Town Kings Cross few realise that a second lab is planned for Hampstead Road next to the Regents Park estate....on the site of the old National Temperance Hospital and the Margarete Centre. This means that Camden's 4,200 addicts could have their treatment interrupted or even stopped which could force many back onto street drugs. {Heroin is physically addictive and withdrawal symptoms are severe, methadone withdrawals are worse...} That's over four thousand people without help.

Plans have been announced that a new needle exchange and advice cntre in Camden "could" open in the future are vague. Worse still Frank Dobson MP for Camden stated at a packed community meeting against the lab "I might not be able to stop the labs but at least I stopped the needle exchange which we find very worrying.

Interestingly the supporters of the MRC / NIMR / UCL / CRUK lab have attempted to brand camapigners against the lab as "mad" , "paranoid" , "fantasists" "nutters" etc who are "panicking".

This includes Mandy Ford from London Against Camden Danger Lab and Candy Udwin who have both been called "nutters".
We feel that if someone does indeed have mental ill health or drug / alchohol problems they have every right and reason to campaign as anyone else and under the current circumstances more so where the Maragarete Centre is concerned....and people who have tried to disregard the rights of these campaigners to be heard should be downright, utterly ashamed of themselves.

Other campaigners against the lab include :
Andrew Dismore MP for Hendon who has said "....a virus leak in Mill Hill where the current NIMR lab is would be nasty but if this were to happen in Kings Cross it would be even nastier".

Keith Mann : A highly respected and accomplished animal rights activist who has saved so many animals they cannot be counted and who was sent to prison for exposing an animal testing lab who were carrying out illegal cosmetic Botox experiments.

Benjamin Zephaniah : Offered the OBE {which he turned down} for his good work for people and animals.

If you have drug, alchol or mental health problems or are worried how the closure of the Margarete Centre might affect you or your loved ones you can contact :

Why is the lab called "28 Days Later" lab? Remember Pirbright? Foot & Mouth?

01.12.2008 20:01

At Pirbright in Surrey a virus escaped...it was called Foot and Mouth disease which affects farm animals. Millions of animals up and down the country were slaughtered by the army and farms were quarantined...meaning that animals and people were under movement restrictions.

If something happened like this in London..and it COULD....the results would be catatsrophic.

The current NIMR lab in Mill Hill holds Avian Flu {Bird Flu} which is transmittable to humans in a transmutable form.

Yes it is also true that the British Transport Police were not informed by the lab consortium about the plans for the labs, one of which will be next to St Pancras International and will hold deadly viruses and that officers knocked on campaigners doors to find out if the "rumours" about the lab were a "genuine concern"....Embarassingly for ourselves we refused to answer the door and they then had to write to us. We have the letter to prove that they knew absolutely nothing about the lab and the dangers it poses.

{P.S. This is not the same thing as "going to the police"....we have asked them to oppose planning permission for the lab on Health and Safety grounds...if the lab consortium didn't even consult or inform them what ELSE will they "forget" to tell people including the Security Services {MI5 / MI6 and Emergency Services such as BTP and the Fire Brigade? These are the people who mwill have to deal with terror attack or virus leak....And as for those who are accusing us of creating a "climate of fear"....for those of us who live near the scenes of the 7/7 and 21/7 bombings...some of us were and still are affeced first hand by this through being on buses or trains or living nearby the sites hit by bombs and we do NOT want this deadly vrus labs for MANY MANY reasons.... including the animals, health and safety, the need for housing & community facilities and the need for drugs, alchohol and mental health services in Camden.

The Margarete Centre is at 108 Hampstead Road, Camden NW1 2LS, and can be contacted on 0207 530 3086 / 3088

Our first {informal} meeting will be held in 28 Days time in Camden

01.12.2008 20:22

We will be holding our first {informal} meeting at Inspiral Lounge in Camden on the Sunday 28 December.

Inspiral Lounge is a vegan cafe / music venue that also sells "alternative culture" books, magazines, flower remedies and has free internet access for customers of the cafe. It is at 250 Camden High Street, Camden, London UK.
We are not booking a room and everyone attending the meeting will be expected to buy food or a drink in the cafe ; ) , this is an informal meeting for a chat about the issues around the lab and for people to meet up....

The meeting will start at 6.30 pm.

The items on the agenda include :

What do YOU the people of London want us to do to campaign against this?

Creating art displays and exhibitions to show how the lab will affect Londoners, Camdenites and the animals.

Themes can include : animal testing, "28 Days Later" . Bird Flu, the need for housing, the need for drugs / alcohol and mental health services in Camden....this is YOUR meeting, come and have YOUR say.

P.S. We LOVE Inspiral Lounge....another venue we thoroughly approve of is Club Surya / Club4Climate which is the World's first ecological nightclub which has a specially adapted dance floor that utilises the energy of clubbers to provide energy {electricity} for the club.

We look forward to seeing you.

Mandy ford has campaigned on stalls and demos for animals for several years.

We are a small campaign and any donations to help us keep the mailbox running, printing leaflets etc will be appreciated. We haven't fundraised as yet as we didn't know whether or not the lab would be given the go-ahead etc However it now looks more and more like this will be steamrollered through "whether or not the people of Camden want it"....so we are now campaigning "proper" so to speak.

Anyone with any relevant skills who wants to help can contact us on 07505664665 or email  camdendangerlabartscollective@yahoo.co.uk

We particularly want to hear from people from groups such as Critical Mass, Rythms of Resistance etc ...we plan to hold a big noisy demo when the lab consortium go for planning permission. We do however want to keep the demos "fluffy" and don't want to hear from people who want to "chuck things" or advocate "burning things down" etc etc.....; )

It has been suggested that a "28 Days Later" zombie themed fancy dress demo would be a good idea and we think so too.

See you soon.

I make no apoligies for putting this on these pages.

02.01.2009 06:00

These issues are equally important and you can still care passionately about and be against animal testing even if you are "just a crackhead".
