Anti-poverty campaigner Bob Geldof charged $100,000 to go to Melbourne and give a speech about world suffering. Geldof, 54, spoke about the tragedy of Third World poverty and the failure of governments to combat the crisis, at a Crown casino function on Thursday night.
But the outspoken human rights activist charged about $100,000 for his trouble - a speaker's fee that included the cost of luxury hotel rooms and first-class airfares. Fellow activist the Rev Tim Costello, World Vision's CEO, spoke for free. An event insider said the Geldof payments included the costs of a minder.
"It was an inspiring speech. But when you think he got paid $100,000 to talk about poverty, it seems like a bit of a contradiction," the insider said. "That's $100,000 that could have made a difference to poverty right there. Everyone in the audience would have walked away in awe. If only they knew the full story."

crown casino...back in the day

the real issue who is who paid him?
Crown Casino? ........we shut that one down back in the day!
See here http://www.takver.com/history/s11.htm
Rev Tim good guy but wouldn't come near the blockade.
He had campaigned for years to shut down the casino, wouldn't even shut down for Good Friday.
The gambling commission shut it for 3 daze once the blockade kicked in
Owner Kerry Packer R.I.P. mighty pissed off
We even kept the U.S. Olympic basketball team locked up in the penthouse for the first day, they couldn't train and fled on the 2nd.
Trade Union bureaucrats scabbed and broke the effective blockade getting venue workers in
Vic Labor Party government sent in the riot squad to do their worst and we settled out of court seven years later for their privilege of bashing the shite out of us
I limped away from Crown Casino with a few OZ grand (approx 97 less than Sir Bob for his vist!)
...and that movement got hijacked by the NGO bureaucrats and knighted pop stars and of course a few of the hardcore were killed and badly injured.
But it built character, onward, onward.......

Tax Justice Petition

2. Tobin Tax/CTT: bring in levy on international currency trade, a tax to create:
(i) billions in revenue for global public services. Levy monies to be ring-fenced for Millennium Development Goals. (ii) redistribution to the most needy, via regional social funds or direct to grassroots organisations for universal provision of housing, sanitation, clean water and food. (iii) the 'response element' of your proposed early warning system. CTT is a means by which to cool markets by levying higher when markets look to overheat. (iv) conditions for an end to poverty and injustice, and therefore unrest.
3. Common Agricultural Policy Reform: half the EU budget (33 billion GBP) is now spent on CAP. This severely curtails agricultural competitivity in the poorest sections of the world. End all CAP subsidies to large corporations and landowners. Keep CAP subsidies for small farms, and extend to other local EU projects for food sovereignty, provision of social housing, self-governance structures and other basic services.

What is poverty then?
If poverty is distorted then it cannot be countered.
Yet the Bob Geldof trade has been really about disguising the truth about poverty.
For ALL of Blair's time, Geldof was taking part in the sort of things that has been noticed in Melbourne in the main post here.
and in the manifestly false package that geldof was allowed to front via the bbc and at the expense of the truth about poverty.
everything about geldof and poverty has been a con.
so what is the secret behind his being officially treated as a commercial saint?
The answer is not all that hard to find. Geldof was launched by the looters, for the looters and he remains of essential and timely use to the looters. Geldof is of the looters.... That was, is and shall always be the real role and purpose of Geldof in relation to poverty.

Bob Geldof keynote speaker at Australian 'Jewish National Fund' fundraisers

(NOVEMBER 14, 2008)
Bob the Builder
Ahead of his keynote address at a Jewish National Fund function in Sydney, activist and musician Sir Bob Geldof talks to DARREN LEVIN about saving the world, rock’n’roll and being one-quarter Jewish.
WHEN making poverty history tops your agenda, you tend not to sweat the small stuff. Like the nature of the speech you’re giving at a Jewish National Fund (JNF) gala dinner that costs $75 a head.
“I’ll make it up as I go along,” human-rights activist and musician Sir Bob Geldof says candidly over the phone from London.
“If they’re lucky to get me on a good day, they’ll get 10 minutes of sense ... It’s largely down to what interests them, but it could range from everything – it could be rock’n’roll, Africa, the current meltdown, politics. It’s a variable feast.”
As for whether the Negev -– the focus of the JNF’s latest campaign -– will get a guernsey, the one-time frontman of The Boomtown Rats isn’t so sure. Environmental initiatives and community welfare are the sorts of things that “trigger my interest”, Geldof says, “but it doesn’t mean that I go around all day thinking about that, you know?”
Geldof’s JNF talk in Randwick on Sunday (November 16) is one of several private speaking engagements on his whistlestop tour of Australia. He also hopes to “drop in” on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to discuss one of his pet topics: foreign aid.

Singing for our supper
LEGENDARY rock star and social activist Sir Bob Geldof was in Australia last week for a number of speaking engagements, including Jewish National Fund (JNF) events in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. He proved to be a huge draw card for the organisation, bringing in some 800 potential donors to the Sydney luncheon event alone.
Geldof is not the first well-known speaker to bring in the crowds. In June last year, 1200 members of Melbourne’s Jewish community attended a JNF dinner where prime minister John Howard spoke, and in August this year, Mount Everest climber Cheryl Bart brought in a similar number for the Jewish Communal Appeal annual gala.
