Italy to increase Troop numbers on the street.

iosaf | 05.09.2008 11:50 | Anti-militarism | Migration | Repression | World

We all know that the Italian state put 3,000 troops including paratroopers on the streets of Milan, Rome and Naples earlier this year. We were unanimous in our condemnation. Pat yourself on the back. But now we get to see what they did. Figures available today confirm that the Italian army has participated in 97 arrests of which 66 people were migrants. Just in case you're bad at soft maths - that indicates that two thirds of military arrests of civilians have been migrants & the arrest rate is about one to every thirty soldiers. In addition to those fascination factoids there have been 263 reports made and 242 car thefts dealt with.

Obviously Italy needs more troops on the street. & minister of the interior Roberto Maroni has confirmed on his webpage and in an interview that Italy is going to get a surge.

You can read the interview here  http://carta.ilmessaggero.it/sfoglia_giornale.php But you have to pay a subscription charge. Save yourself the bother & trust me that he's putting more soldiers on the streets. Here is a confimartion link from the Italian newswire service that the interview occured and it means more troops on the streets.  http://www.asca.it/moddettnews.php?idnews=775809&canale=ORA&articolo=SICUREZZA:%20MARONI,%20CHIEDERO'%20DI%20AUMENTARE%20I%20MILITARI%20NELLE%20CITTA'

Maroni for his part was adament that he never had any doubts his proposals were the correct ones & not only points to an increase in deportation by 57% but promises his census of gypsies will allow for a better supervision of their camps by October 15th. He's also quite chuffed that he said the taxpayer money by opting for new technologies in the census rather than the more traditional tattoo'ed number on the forearm quipping that Italy now leads the world in innovation.

or maybe he didn't say something so shocking.

but the figures are true.
263 specific reports made by good citizens to the Army.
242 of which were car-theft related. (we see the profile of good citizen)
97 arrests by military of civilians.
33 of whom were really foreigners from foreign lands.
of whom statiscally at least 16 have been or are about to be deported.

Here's the government link which under article 7 annex b -of the decree 92/2008 which became law 24/7/2008 allowed for 3,000 troops to be temporarily stationed from 4th of August  http://www.governo.it/GovernoInforma/Dossier/pacchetto_sicurezza/impiego_forze_armate.html
I do not know yet whether the increase of troops must be debated in the parliament and would need another law. Thomas Hammerberg the EU Commissioner for Human Rights  http://www.coe.int/t/commissioner/About/biohammarberg_en.asp has so far not made a statement. Not that really changes anything. His report in July didn't change much. You can read the memorandum based on a visit to Italy by the Commissioner for Human Rights (the Commissioner) on 19-20 June 2008 which reviewed the issues of the Roma community Sinti and Immigration policies in EU member states.  https://wcd.coe.int/ViewDoc.jsp?id=1309811&Site=CommDH&BackColorInternet=FEC65B&BackColorIntranet=FEC65B&BackColorLogged=FFC679

last article from me on this subject was written when the troops were deployed -
"With Troops on the street, the Fascists must be in power."
