After EDO, George Bush this Sunday, London?

JOHN | 10.06.2008 12:05 | Social Struggles | London | World

PROTEST BUSH VIST - Parliament Square, Sunday 15th June, 5pm.
George Bush is coming to London and a protest site has been announced by Stop The War Coalition. Although not a thrilling action, possible momentum from the great demo at Edo in Brighton last week could make something more direct happen on the streets of London.

Ignoring the history and pathetic nature of StW Coalition, it seems like a good opportunity to hit the streets and try to realise some collective disobedience the likes of which have not been seen for ages until last weeks fun and games at the very recent Smash EDO protest.
It's noticeable that Indymedia have hardly covered this visit by Bush which seems to suggest that people just aren't interested. Fair enough, the StWC don't inspire much do they? However, we never have to let them dictate what we do. Previous Bush visits had an element of spontaneous street fun by random elements in the mass. Who knows?
See you there? Maybe I will!

StWC reckons cops have banned this demo

10.06.2008 17:59

StWC reckons cops have banned this demo. Could be a stunt like last time when they said it was banned (which it was for a while) but then after the last minute legal march, they went on about how 1000's of anti-war protestors had defied the ban which was a total bareface lie.

Stop the War Coalition
Press Release
Tuesday 11 June 2008
immediate

Anti-Bush demonstration banned from Whitehall.

The Stop the War Coalition has been informed by the Metropolitan Police that a
proposed march, co-organised with CND and the British Muslim Initiative, to
protest George Bush's visit will not be allowed. The Coalition has
organised
scores of marches on this route, including during Bush's last visit in
2003.

It seems that when George W Bush visits this country traditional rights of
assembly are to be removed from the people. This would be unacceptable for the
visit of any foreign leader, but for George Bush, a man many regard as a war
criminal, it is particularly deplorable.

We are calling on those who care for our democratic rights to come to
Parliament Square at 5.0 pm on Sunday 15 June. Some of those who signed
statements accusing Bush of war crimes will be leading this protest.

dear JOHN,

please do not get your hopes up too high. the way i see it, what happened at smash EDO was fantastic, but also the result of several months of prep work on the back of several years of campaigning. i am all for that type of thing happening much more often (every day really) but please do not expect it to happen out of the blue at some random stop the war march that, like you correctly suggest, is not even drawing much interest anymore.

So: why not come prepared, encourage others, do expect the impossible, but please don't get too sad if that does not occur.

me

Not wildly optimistic.

Ta. Don't worry. I won't be so surprised when nothing happens. I figure a lot of work went into the EDO demo of course but the spirit of these carries over too.
