Free Tibet demo in Central London

Kristian Buus | 24.03.2008 18:12 | Repression | Social Struggles | London | World

As a response to the Chinese crack down on the Tibetan up-rising in Tibet and the general repression of Tibetans, a demonstration was arranged, marching from outside the Chinese embassy to Trafalgar Square. Hundreds of Tibetans and supporters turned out to a spirited demonstration with shouts for China to leave Tibet.

China invaded Tibet nearly 50 years ago and she has ever since repressed the Tibetans. Tibetans do not have any citizenship in their own country and countless have perished trying to escape the country by walking across the Himalayas to India. The last couple of weeks have seen new unrest in the country with Tibetans demanding their rights and the Chinese government cracking down any protesters killing up to 130 people, according to Tibetan sources.

Speakers - amplification needed

Great demo. You need to get a sound system for next time. I couldn't hear a word the speakers said and I was only 30 yards away.

Burma and Tibet

What the Chinese Government has done openly in Tibet, it essentially (through influence) did the same in Burma.

Still oppression, different tactics, same goal.

China's propaganda

24.03.2008 23:26

Well, i don't know how Skunk's post (above) managed to slither its way onto Indymedia without being censored since it's clearly offensive, but at least it shows how ugly and plain ridiculous China's propaganda against the Tibetans, and the Dalai Lama in particular, can be. It simply makes China look the fool (together with Bush).

Team Tibet Film

25.03.2008 06:04

Please see my film"Team Tibet" (links below) which follows a group of Tibetans living in exile in India, who want Tibet to be able to take part in the 2008 Olympics. The film asks: Why did they flee Tibet? What is the situation in Tibet under Chinese occupation? What are their hopes for the future of their country, people and cultures? And What about the 2008 games?

Here are the links to "Team Tibet" on YouTube. Parts One to Four:

Did anyone get section, named and photo?

25.03.2008 11:29

Did anyone get section, named, photo and addresed as par usual in the "normal" demos... I suspect not, the Police tends to go soft on these demos.. I seen it happen before whent the Chinese last visited this conutry the Police couldn't have done more to make the Chinese feel just like home. As par usual the "non-tibet" looking people got the treatment of being searched whilst the tibetian were left alone and simply watched on.

Offensive pic ?

25.03.2008 12:01

No, it just expresses an opinion, mine.

Care to comment on the pic itself btw ?

How can a man, erm... I should say a god maybe, such as the Dalai Lama, whose main motto is non-violence, hang out so friendlily with a man who is arguably the most brutal and violent person on the planet ?

Religion fraud

25.03.2008 17:03

Skunk -
Your picture is of two frauds. The Chadded occupier of the White House, and a former occupier of the Potala, which was last lawfully occupied by the Sixth Dalai Lama, the one who wrote the poem about footprints in the snow. He clearly achieved Enlightenment and soon after disappeared. The Enlightened are not available for re-birth. Liberate Tibet. Liberate America!

Being human

26.03.2008 01:32

Skunk - you asked for a comment on the picture itself ("partners in crime" above):

Does merely sitting next to a violent man make the other violent?

There was a Tibetan monk called Tenzin Choedrak, who wrote movingly about his years of imprisonment and torture at the hands of the Chinese. When he was released and had arrived safely in India, he was asked if he had felt afraid of the danger he had been in. No, he replied, the only danger he had been afraid of was of hating the Chinese.
