Israel To Continue Illegal Construction

A partial list of United Nations Resolutions against Israel
United Nations Resolution 127: " . . . 'recommends' Israel suspends it's 'no-man's zone' in Jerusalem".
United Nations Resolution 162: " . . . 'urges' Israel to comply with UN decisions".
United Nations Resolution 250: " . . . 'calls' on Israel to refrain from holding military parade in Jerusalem".
United Nations Resolution 251: " . . . 'deeply deplores' Israeli military parade in Jerusalem in defiance of Resolution 250".
United Nations Resolution 252: " . . . 'declares invalid' Israel's acts to unify Jerusalem as Jewish capital".
United Nations Resolution 267: " . . . 'censures' Israel for administrative acts to change the status of Jerusalem".
United Nations Resolution 271: " . . . 'condemns' Israel's failure to obey UN resolutions on Jerusalem".
United Nations Resolution 298: " . . . 'deplores' Israel's changing of the status of Jerusalem".
United Nations Resolution 446: " . . . 'determines' that Israeli settlements are a 'serious obstruction' to peace and calls on Israel to abide by the Fourth Geneva Convention".
United Nations Resolution 452: " . . . 'calls' on Israel to cease building settlements in occupied territories".
United Nations Resolution 465: " . . . 'deplores' Israel's settlements and asks all member states not to assist Israel's settlements program".
United Nations Resolution 471: " . . . 'expresses deep concern' at Israel's failure to abide by the Fourth Geneva Convention".
United Nations Resolution 476: " . . . 'reiterates' that Israel's claim to Jerusalem are 'null and void'".
United Nations Resolution 478: " . . . 'censures (Israel) in the strongest terms' for its claim to Jerusalem in its 'Basic Law'".
United Nations Resolution 673: " . . . 'deplores' Israel's refusal to cooperate with the United Nations.

When President Bush initiated war against Iraq, one of the main reasons given in his letter of transmittal to Congress of March 18 2003 was that Iraq was in defiance of UN Resolutions regarding weapons of mass destruction. Of course, in hindsight, we know Saddam was actually in compliance with UN Resolutions, but the point is that if the United States justifies its foreign policy on the basis of enforcement of United Nations policy, then clearly, Israel should be called to account for its actions.

Israel's Olmert: Building to Continue in East Jerusalem
By VOA News
17 March 2008

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says Israel will continue to build in occupied east Jerusalem despite international concern that such action may harm the Mideast peace process.

Israel plans to build hundreds of new apartments in Har Homa, a Jewish neighborhood (Settlement-1) in a part of Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinians as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

(And granted to them by the UN Partition plan, which Israel rejected, despite the fact that it created their state.)

Mr. Olmert said Monday there is, in his words, "no chance" Israel will give up a neighborhood like Har Homa.

(Proving, once again, that Zionism is not willing to negotiate in the name of peace, and that it is the Palestinians who have no 'partner for peace' ...)

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qureia resumed peace talks Monday in Jerusalem despite disagreements about Israel's construction plans.

It was their first publicly-acknowledged meeting since Israel began a military offensive against Gaza militants last month.

(Actually, it was an offensive against Gaza, not militants.)

Palestinians carry the body of 21-month-old baby girl Salsabeel Abu Jalhoum, killed in an Israeli airstrike, during her funeral in Jebaliya refugee camp, 02 Mar 2008

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas briefly suspended the talks to protest the Israeli offensive, which killed at least 120 Palestinians, including civilians.

(More objective media outlets point out that over half of those killed were civilians, including several children.)

Israel launched the offensive in response to increased rocket fire by Gaza-based militants on towns in southern Israel.

(That's BS. Israel planned this months in advance, and the rockets were a response to their illegal policies of Collective Punishment, which Israel's own defense staff warned would result.)

Livni said Monday that Israel will not use terrorism as an excuse to avoid negotiations with Mr. Abbas' government.

(No, they want to try and force a deal before the legitimate representatives of the Palestinians, who can't be manipulated, force an honest round of talks.)

Mr. Olmert also said that Israel will keep building in places that it plans to keep in the future, especially in Jerusalem. Israel has said it expects to retain major settlement blocs in the occupied West Bank under any peace deal with the Palestinians.

(That's precisely the reason they were built - to annex land.)

The international "road map" peace plan calls for Israel to halt all settlement activity and for the Palestinians to disarm militants. The United States has called on both sides to do more to honor their road map commitments.
