Saturday's demonstration in support of asylum rights saw up to 50 people join in a militant and noisy march from Whitworth Park through Rusholme up Dickenson Road past Longsight Market ending with a rally outside Slade Lane Neighbourhood Centre. There were banners from North West Asylum Seekers Defence Group, British Libya Solidarity Campaign and Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! The march was also supported by members of the International Organisation of Iranian Refugees and the Anarchist Federation with food provided at the end rally by Manchester Food not Bombs.
The demand of the demonstration was clear to all, opposition to Labour racism with slogans calling For the right to work! Stop starving asylum seekers! No to destitution! Stop deportations! End all immigration controls!
The next step in the campaign to defend the rights of asylum seekers in Manchester is an open campaign meeting, 2pm Saturday 17 November, Friends Meeting House, Mount Street, Manchester. The meeting is organised by North West Asylum Seekers Defence Group, we invite all those who want to organise against the growing racist attacks on asylum seekers and other immigrants to attend.
