The Shortwave Report 10/19/07 ¡Listen Globally!

Dan Roberts | 19.10.2007 01:59 | Analysis | World

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files- broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. China, Netherlands, Cuba, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (October 19) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (4.9MB) (28:59)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- China was predictably angry about Geo Bush's meeting with the Dalai Lama. There was a meeting of the leaders of the 5 nations bordering the Caspian Sea, where they agreed to not allow any outside country to use them as military bases against any of the other members. Palestinian leaders are upset that Israel has announced plans to resume archeological excavation beneath the Temple Mount. An Iraqi Shiite leader made a visit to a Sunni region calling for reconciliation and national unity. Tuesday was World Food Day, an international attempt to insure adequate food for everyone on the planet.
From NETHERLANDS- Another piece about World Food Day, where they discuss how our diets would look if everyone on the planet had an equal share of food. The Netherlands plans to scrap the basic student grants to pay for education, leading to criticism in the press about only the elite get educated. As international criticism of the Burmese government increases, sanctions have been placed on many goods, but not gas and oil exports.
From CUBA- More information on Iraqi attempts to expel Blackwater mercenaries from the country, while the company just won a contract to fight what are called "terrorists with drug ties." Namibia has deported 2 Americans for recruiting citizens to work as mercenaries in Iraq.
From RUSSIA- The IAEA reported that it knows nothing about a nuclear facility in Syria which Israel is reported to have recently attacked. A joint statement was signed between the Russian and Iranian presidents to continue developing a nuclear power plant in Iran, to maintain Iraq's integrity and sovereignty, and numerous other issues. The White House attempted to stop the Congress from voting to call the elimination of Armenians in Turkey as genocide, since it would harm relations with Turkey. As Turkey prepares to attack the Kurds in Iraq, the possibility of forming a new state of Kurdistan increases- as does the probability of an unequal distribution of oil wealth among the peoples of Iraq.

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm (PDST) on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- Freak Radio Santa Cruz  now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am and Monday at 5:30pm(PDST)
The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from or iTunes (search for "shortwave" in podcasts)

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)
