GMTV was yesterday fined a record £2m by the media watchdog Ofcom for the "widespread and systematic deception" of up to 25m viewers who spent up to £35m to enter phone-in competitions they had little or no chance of winning. In the most serious of a series of premium rate scandals which have combined with fakery allegations and falsified competitions to cause a crisis in viewer trust, Ofcom said GMTV was guilty of "gross negligence".
