Swedish activists in airport runway occupation

Plane Stupid | 16.04.2007 15:02 | Climate Chaos | World

Yesterday a Swedish group, inspired by the UK's Plane Stupid and Rising Tide broke onto and occupied a runway at Stockholm airport.

On 14 April, activists broke into Bromma Airport in Stockholm to occupy the runway for half an hour. The scheduled flight to Gothenburg – a very short distance indeed – was delayed, and some planes had to divert their landing.

The ten activists, linked by chains and carrying a huge banner which read “Stop domestic flights”, managed to enter the airport and runway without being detected. After some five minutes, police arrived to the scene, but refrained from violent intervention. When the blockade had been carried to its planned end, the activists were arrested and informed of the formal charge of aggravated trespass. The most likely punishment is some heavy fines, but prison terms are possible.

The action was carried out by Climax, a group in Stockholm formed two weeks ago. It is the seed of a direct action-movement against the root causes of climate change in a country which has just recently woken up to the facts of ongoing global warming. Climax is inspired by Plane Stupid and Rising Tide. The action of 14 April, coinciding with the enormous National Day of Climate Action in the U.S., was the first of its kind to occur in Sweden. More is bound to follow soon.

Global action against global warming!

Great Work

16.04.2007 15:44

This is excellent work, my partner Bruce and I recently chained ourselves to a bus in Bradford bus station. The 64,23,11,13 and 21 services were all delayed while they managed to move us on. Any road traffic is as evil as air-traffic.
Good luck all.......................................Steven .

Don't forget to tell them about the little accident though....poor Steve had an accident. His mummy had to bring him down a newish pair of trousers...............................

Good action all

They held me down ..

16.04.2007 17:34

Oh yes I was held down by the Police for ages, I was brutalised and they refused to allow me to pass urine, nature finally took it's course. I don't mind, you see, when you're as experienced as me and Bruce at carrying out demonstrations and actions nothing becomes a problem, until next time.
Take Care all..........................Long Sigh.............................Steven

I nearly pissed myself once when I was locked on on a slope higher up than a pretty girl - with cops offering us cups of tea. You just can't piss on a pretty girl unless you are on first name terms.

Early morning actions are the worst, everyone urinates more then. If you get slightly drunk the night before, you clear your bladder much more when you wake up and although you lie their longer dehydrated , that is less unpleasant.

I saw some graffiti in a corporate toilet once, 'Doing a good job here is like pissing yourself in black trousers, it gives you a warm feeling but no one notices'. I was out leafletting tonight with a lovely woman who pissed herself when a rottwieller almost her height sprang at her barking. She was wearing black trousers so we laughed and kept on leafletting. It's why anarchists wear black or waterproof trousers or just don't care what anyone thinks.

Good action, and good commitment from you too.

Danny
