Some argue that ancient Egypt was an anarchist society, with the pharoah acting as a first amongst equals rather than the slave driver that some texts have written about.
Some say that Jesus Christ was an anarchist, as was the prophet Mohammed, both pushing for free trade and mutual co-operation rather than a dominating force of government.
The pilgrims of the May Flower were also anarchists, moving away from the king in order to settle on their own land. Unfortunately this was destroyed by the invention of weapons and the war of liberation against the UK when it tried to invade. I think that fucked up the population of the original states enough to send them on a murderous rampage across the continent. Their system now is in ruins, particularly due to the high gun crime rate and feelings of insecurity that it brings, plus the federal government of Washington is becoming more and more greedy, to the extent that the individual states have less and less voice regarding local policies and immigration.
Mohatma Gandhi is a notable example of anarchist leader. He spoke for devolution and localisation and against imperial aggression.
Marx was at one time an anarchist as well, on the side of Kropotkin, but his ideas regarding the economy were not very well founded, with an eventual split between the two thinkers leading to the emergence of communism and dominance of the proletariat, which obviously had negative implications, illustrated with the rise of Stalin and the crushing of anarchist communes by Trotsky and the Red Army in Ukraine shortly after the revolution of 1917.
So yes most anarchist societies have in fact been destroyed by imperial forces throughout the ages, although some do still exist, most tribes are built on anarchist / primitive principles. History has tainted the concept of anarchism. However, it is the true state of mankind, and it is the key to unlocking a Kingdom of Grace and eternal flourishing for every single individual who embraces the world and what life has to give.

If I remember rightly, the biggest problems facing people born and bred on Tristan were genetic defects arising through there being too small a gene pool. Was their social structure dictated by the hardness of living there? Or was there a culltural base to their poverty? Could they have grown to a range of cultures as detected by Margaret Meade on an island in a differet Ocean? I forget the name of her book on that.
