soli | 05.02.2007 09:47 | London | World

Two Greek political prisoners are in the midst of a hunger strike. On Monday, one of them will be on his 67th day. They have been held in prison for over 8 months for participating in a demonstration at the European Social Forum. It is entirely possible that the Greek state will watch them die. It is time for London to stand up.

Solidarity Demonstration for Hunger Strikers in Greece

The Greek State is getting away with murder - free the hunger strikers NOW!

More info:

May 6, Athens, Greece: Twenty demonstrators are arrested and detained,
suspected of participating in riots that erupted during the demonstration
of the European Social Forum on the day. Amongst the detainees are
Tarasios Zadorozni, Gerasimos Kyriakopoulos and Konstantinos Katsadouras.

January 6: The three are still held, eight months after their detention,
without even standing trial. The Greek State is punishing our anarchist
comrades for their ideas and postpones their trial for as long as
possible; there is no evidence of their participation in the rioting,
apart from some obscure testimonies made by police officers. Two of them
are now on hunger strike: Tarasios Zadorozni is on his 69th day and
Gerasimos Kyriakopoulos is on day 53...

Tarasios Zadorozni, an anarchist migrant from Ukraine, went on hunger
strike on November 29th and his comrade Gerasimos Kyriakopoulos joined him
on December 15th. They are now detained in the Athens Nikaea General
Hospital. A medical report issued on Jan 24 stated that their condition
was severe and they faced death imminently. They both already suffered
from orthostatic hypotension; Zadarozni had lost 15 kg, already suffered
from muscular atrophy and bradycardia while Kyriakopoulos (who went on
hunger strike already missing one kidney and his spleen from a previous
injury) had lost 5 kg, suffered from severe nose bleeds and showed signs
of gallbladder dysfunction.

On January 23 the Attorney General of Athens proposed that the hunger
strikers are not be released - he proposed, in other words, that they face
their death. The committee of judges that is now responsible to decide on
the Attorney General's recommendation has been deliberately postponing its
decision ever since.

January 25: A letter from the Nikea Hospital

We have spent the past few weeks in the Nikea hospital in conditions of
isolation with no phone contact nor any direct access to newspapers.
During visits by our lawyers and our relatives we have been subject to
constant harassment. At the same time however we hear the news of the
continuing and ever-increasing solidarity actions towards our struggle and
how they are also confronted by the Greek State. Having lost whatever
"humane" façade it might have had, the atrociousness of the State's true
face is now manifested: They zealously repress all efforts to publicise
our collective struggle. The police's severe beating of V. Grivas, last
Saturday January 13, is a typical example of such. We are truly glad when
we hear news from all of you: the unmediated contact and the power of your
solidarity give us the courage and strength to continue.

THE MORE THAT THEY TRY TO SUBJUGATE CONSCIENCES, THE MORE OUR CONSCIENCES
WILL REBEL.

THE PASSION FOR FREEDOM IS STRONGER THAN ANY PRISON.

GERASIMOS KIRIAKOPOULOS
