More than 300 demonstrators were arrested in the Danish capital on Saturday after violent clashes between police and youths who were protesting against the planned closure of a youth centre in the city.

Riots broke out when hundreds of young people started an unannounced demonstration to avoid eviction from Ungdomshuset. The use of the building was granted to young people for cultural purposes some twenty years ago by the City Council, but now the building has been sold to a Christian organization. A police spokesman said some 300 people had been arrested. The banner reads 'Some things are worth fighting for - the Youth House never surrenders (the address is 69 Jagvejen)'
