Haidi Giuliani and Antiracists occupy Migrant Detention Centre of Crotone and bl

Some 70 italian anti-racist groups of the south-west Italy, together with members of parliament Haidi Giuliani and Francesco Caruso of the Refounded Communist Party, occupied a migrant detention centre (CPT) while others blocked the road to airport in Crotone (Calabria, sout-west Italy) in the late afternoon on Saturday 9th of December. Haidi Giuliani is the mother of Carlos Guiliani, murdered by the state during the Anti-G8 protests in Genoa and Francesco Caruso is a former leading No Global activist.

In course of an official parliamentary visit to the CPT of Crotone, Italy's largest detention centre for migrants, parliamentarians Francisco Caruso and Haidi Giuliani locked on with chains and refused to leave until the government fixed a date for the closure of all the migrant detention centres in Italy. Outside activists from the antiracist networks of Campania and Calabria protested, demanding the immediate closing for the CPT and the abolition of the Bossi-Fini law on immigration.
The two members of parliament of Rifondazione passed the night in the calabrian center and were only removed by the authorities on Sunday.

At the same time, tens of activists of the antiracist networks of the Campania and the Calabria occupied the motorway that connects Crotone to the airport, where they take migrants to be deported on the special flights, whose only crime is to try and escape misery and war and come to Italy.

No MP in England would do something like that

Hats off to Haidi and her friends!

It would be hard to imagine any radical or progressive English members of parliament staging an equivalent protest here in the UK.

John McDonell, the current hard left contender for the Labour Party Leadership, in whose constituency lies Harmondsworth and Colnsbrook detention centres, main demand is that such prisons should be taken off the privat companies and run directly by the state, rather than abolished as an afront to our common humanity.

Check it out on his blog!

I mean state controlled prisons for people who have not comitted crimes are so progressive compared to privately run ones - just look at the Soviet Union.
