Maralinga anniversary a warning against further nuclear adventures

by Maralinga Indymedia 25/09/06 Perth IMC

AUSTRALIA: PERTH ACTION - Wednesday 27/ 09/06.

As the Federal Government considers selling uranium to India the Australian Conservation Foundation said this week’s 50th anniversary of nuclear weapons tests at Maralinga in South Australia was a sobering warning about the damage that inevitably accompanies nuclear adventurism.

“Australian uranium contributed to the British nuclear weapons testing program in the outback and it may again fuel atomic fires,” said ACF Nuclear Free Campaigner David Noonan.

“The push for unconstrained uranium exports is furthering regional insecurities at a time when the international nuclear safeguards system is fracturing.

“The current rush by the Federal Government to get uranium out of the ground and shipped to China and India undermines international efforts to put the brakes on nuclear proliferation and promote disarmament.

'50,000 volts' Scully zaps community
by Parrot Press Adelaide IMC 28/09/06

AUSTRALIA: NSW: Police Minister Carl Scully's demonstration of a new Taser stun gun inside Parliament House has landed him in hot water with upper house president, Meredith Burgmann, after he flouted her ruling that the weapon was not to be brought into the building.

The NSW Police Association demonstrated the use of the controversial weapon at Parliament today by immobilising a volunteer from the Police Association.

The demonstration was set up for the media in a room at Parliament House - the volunteer was zapped, screaming as he fell to the floor and stayed there.

The Taser fires a pair of probes into the flesh of an offender, delivering a 50,000-volt shock which causes temporary paralysis.

Ms Burgmann said she had told Mr Scully he was not to bring the stun gun into Parliament House.

She said, "He thinks because he's Police Minister he can zap whoever he wants, wherever he wants. He just doesn't make the distinction that this is the Parliament and he's the Government."

Opposition police spokesman Mike Gallacher criticised the demonstration as a media stunt.
