The Bosnian war of the 90s brought a lot of old ex-cold-war specials out to supplement pensions - or when some of them had seen the TV pictures, + wanted to do something about it. ( That mirrors the "gallow glass" / pirate-mercenary variety of a lot of the people out in the increasing pool of people acting as short-term or single-job types that serve to massage the "Casualty Numbers" that appear in the media .These days, when the "peace movement" cant get portrayed as "against the squaddies" (what with the next speaker against the "war of errorism" very often some ex- brigadier or ex-spook as a "yeti" typical trot hippy lefty type.
Good thing too.) - the TV Casualty numbers are a factor - even if the scarred, screwed up or maimed dont get much attention - in fact, in the states it seems some of them even get aggro IN CASE they might speak out against the wars - though thats changing. Anyway - the word "gallow glass" is anglicised gaelic for "foreign soldiers" - these were at first people from the islands + west coast of scotland ( it Grim up N ) that went to the aid of the people of Ireland - about 900 years ago - when the feudalist southerners were trying to invade, when the highlands + islands had a pact defence with the kings of sweden etc so that "1066 + all that" didnt mean occupation for a few hundred years after. Often taken to mean the same as the "pirate-mercenary", the "gallow glass" bunches had a lot in common with the "international brigade" that went to spain, or the young islamic lads from all over the world that responded to the Srebrenica massacre as a 1990s Guernica - then end up in the "thousands-of-secret-jihadi-cells-in-our-midst" faked-up terror hoax tales of the "press", along with people that were in fact recruited by western spooks + ex-spooks to get funnelled by pakistan, at the request of weatern governments, to get taught the way to attack the "soft underbelly" of the Soviets! To wit, the fact that these people were very often conned - at times with drink or drugs, to "get con sent" - or pressganged - then stolen away from communities to get shipped out, far from the support of parents, grandparents etc, then used as cannonfodder at sea in what were, in essence, looting raids against other ships - to slaughter others the same as them, that had gotten conned or kidnapped from different communities. The pirates were people that refused to get used, then rearranged the "distribution" system, offered the sailors of other ships safe treatment + a chance to join them if they also rebelled, ( THAT was why they flew the black skull'n'crossbones flags as they "attacked - to "advertise" a chance for people to get free .)Then, these were the "Quaker-type" equivalents that founded scores of different "new _ _ _ _ s" (insert name of much loved, banished-from birthplace here) - in fact, later, the same black/ skull'n'cross flags were seen in the "crowds" that rebelled against that system that had allowed them to get dragged away.

1 get the peace process in Ireland to happen ( - that did happen -despite the flak )
2 get investigating some of the seeming "third players" (etc) in the abovementioned cold war ( + other) situations
3 get the ex-"terrorists" + serious campaigning, "radical" types to replace the "Studyofterrorism" centres, "Think"tanks, etc - that, even at the surface, have interests - or perhaps, a self-inflicted reversed telescope when it comes to explaining that
TERROR DOESNT WORK
- even, in the current middle east situation, to get loyalists, IRA, Basques, exRaf , ex Brigata Rossa - etc - to explain the way the "strategy of tension" didnt work (- in fact, it seems to most historical experts looking back from 2006 that it was a strategy of faked provocations - Bologna railway station etc. - designed to smear the "left" of the time, hence to "inoculate" society against certain ideas - in fact - the rumours of those times said, it seems, that even the people running these operations had gotten manipulated by others trying to distract attention from actual crimes - but the books remain open as far as thse go - but then - the cases do too.)
