Sunrise Summer Solstice Festie Pics + Report

A few site pics from the Sunrise Summer Solstice Celebration Festival

The Sunrise festival was held for five main days over the summer solstice period. This was a massive undertaking, pulling off the first 24hr music license for such a long festie here in the uk and setting out to have the site served entirely by compost loos (more on that later...)

With stages, sound and lights powered by solar / wind and biodiesel this was like the big green gathering turned into a proper party... (or glastonbury with the corporate crap cut out).

The festival took advantage of there being no glastonbury festie this year and ran up until the summer solstice - 21st june. Around 8000 people attended, with around 3000-3500 approx buying tickets - the rest were crew, performers etc ;)

There were lots of problems, most associated with being the first time it's ever been held. The compost loo infrastructure was an ambitious attempt at the largest deployment of such facilities - it coped pretty well for the first few days, but what with it being a full on festie they couldn't cope towards the end, and financial troubles impacted on their maintenance - that said they were still far far better than the odd few plastic portaloos dotted around site - and lots of lessons were learnt.

The campaigns field also got a bit of a raw deal being located outside of the main festie area - something to work on if it goes ahead next year (currently planned for august bank holiday 07).

But on the whole this was an amazing and inspiring event, with loads to do whether that be watching bands, singers, djs etc, circus + caberet, spiritual stuff a plenty, as well as your green craft and technology workshops, film screenings, skillshares, discussions, and more.

Lots of the usual favourites were there, fast festie fiddle music and the like and bands including tarantism, tragic roundabout, seize the day, 3 daft monkeys, gravy train, badly horsedrawn boy, hattie hatstar, mordekkers, los albertos, the wonderfuls, zetan spore, baghdaddies, incredible string band, rory mcleod, dreadzone, banco de gaia, zion train, groove weird, zen hussies... well the list just goes on and on and on - with multiple areas around the main stage including small world solar stage, the horsedrawn camp, id spiral running psy-trance / chill out 24hrs a day non-stop and other up for it types like schnews, sas, pixie pictures and more...

In the end we stayed for the actual solstice instead of going to Stonehenge (which incidently had an attendance of 17,000 this year - down again - and only around 4 arrests).

Tickets for the Sunrise festie cost £50 - a bargain for five days of full on festival. The downside of not selling enough tickets (but still reaching site capacity due to the massive numbers of crew) is that the festival is down at least £20K maybe more...

I hope they manage to claw some back - many of the bands etc ended up playing for free and a hell of a lot of the working crew didn't get paid - this country needs festivals like this - non corporate, non branded, autonomous, eco-promoting and fun...

...we need to make the alternatives work - or drown in the capitalist shite that passes for festival culture in this age of restrictive legislation and mass consumption.

peace + happy solstice

Drug and cider infested spoilt middle class rich kids.
This is a diversion and detrimental to the class struggle.
After the revolution you will be sent to a re education facility to dry out and learn how to be good comrades.
As for mummy and daddy, they will be up against the wall for being filthy rich c***s.

Old fashioned socialist

Wot!

When I lived in the Westcountry these festivals used to be free and glorious. Is this just another modern scam exploiting the ethos of love and peace but without the mind bending drugs?

'Old Fashioned Socialist' - what the fuck have you done for me lately, eh?

Whats the bets you just sit there in your 'made in china' armchair shouting at the TV, chock-full of cynicism and frustration, living on the past glories of the time when people actually listened to what you had to say. What the fuck have you done for me lately??

These people are partying, who cares whether they're middle class, pissed or stoned? Its a PARTY for fucks sake. And then, even if they made a few connections and decided to go out for a bit of billboard trashing, they will still have done more than you have this year.

What. The. Fuck. Have. You. Done. For. Me. Lately.

Re-educate Socialists?

If it is true about participants being "Drug and cider infested spoilt middle class rich kids" why wasn't the Old fashioned socialist there prostletysing? Or did he try, and finding dogmatic Marxism rejected, too stupid to advance Scientifis Marxist ideas incorporating the necessary Dialectical Synthesis to enable the survial of Earth Life?

The Festival was not a diversion and detrimental to the class struggle. it is a facet of it. and "After the revolution" the participants will very likely be dead Heros of the Revolution . The people who will "be sent to a re education facility to dry out and learn how to be good comrades" after a successful Revolution are the class traitors in the Labour Party and the TUC. (Remember 1926)
.
The juvenile and insulting sexist comment "As for mummy and daddy, they will be up against the wall for being filthy rich c***s" might be better ignored. But since the class traitor Roy Jenkins made it Home Office policy that "We must price firearms certificates out of reach of the Yobboes" it is the Rich who will be doing the shooting. - How many of those blathering about Revolution are holding illegal firearms or any other weapon? Most of them would have trouble getting a bullet up the spout, let alone hit a target.

If anyone is so stupid they are advocating a political path consider that Blair's job was to make socialism impossible in the UK. Anyone who is not actively opposing Blair is a class traitor and a traitor to socialism. Politicians betray their own principles, whether it was Thatcher selling out Conservative Brotain to foreigners, or Labour sellig out socialism. the Lib Dems, the CP, the UKIP, the SWP, and the BNP are all infected with the same Parliamentary rot.

None of them are facing up to the approaching mass extinction, none of them propose any policy that has a chance of everting it, nor any policy to do something to maintain the present gene base.. They are as stupidly wasting money as is Bernard Buttett and the Microsoft Corporation. Expect to meet them all in Hell! God will have no place in Heaven for those engineering the destruction of this Creation of Life.
