PEACE & JUSTICE FOR THE IRAQI PEOPLE – TROOPS HOME NOW
by Stop the War Coalition
Sydney IMC 17/3/06
3 YEARS OF OCCUPATION - 100,000-plus DEAD?RALLY ON THE 3RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE INVASION OF IRAQ
Rallies happened in 7 Australian cities and globally
This rally is jointly organised by Stop the War Coalition & Sydney Peace & Justice Coalition
WHY YOU SHOULD DEMONSTRATE ON MARCH 18
REASONS TO DEMONSTRATE:
1. Iraq is suffering - the occupation has cost more than 100,000 lives with no end in sight. Iraqis want our troops to go.
2. Troops are dying in this war - nearly 100 UK troops and 1,500 US troops so far, with thousands more badly injured.
3. The US and Britain are plotting new aggression (with Australian govt collusion) – against Iran above all. The war could spread and it could become a nuclear war.
4. We were lied to about the attack on Iraq - it is time Bush, Blair & Howard were held to account for their decisions, which have undermined democracy.
5. Howard's foreign policy is making Australians a terror target, as the atrocities in Bali & Jakarta proved.
6. Freedom is under threat - civil liberties are being torn up by the government because of the so-called "war on terror".
7. Australian Muslims are under threat. We must stand together to protect communities being targeted by Islamophobic racists.
8. Millions are being wasted on the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan which could be used for pensions and public services.
9. March 18 is an international day of action against the occupation. Protests are already planned across the world, including in Iraq.
10. The world will be watching - let's show friend and foe alike that the Australian people are opposed to the Iraq occupation and the threats to world peace and our freedom.

"The Twenty-O-Three Initiative"
Open Letter To George Bush
Background
20/03/2003 was the date on which news of the invasion of Iraq first reached Australia. The date of an event of such significance should not be forgotten. It happens to be easy to remember because of the way the numbers repeat. Just say "Twenty-O-Three" twice.
The Twenty-O-Three Initiative is an idea that was originally proposed by the Marrickville Peace Group. Since it was first expressed, it has sparked interest with various other groups and is gaining momentum.
Whilst Australia was involved in the invasion (and is involved in the occupation), the prime mover was definitely the US Government - which is therefore a legitimate target for actions of the peace movement.
The Twenty-O-Three Initiative aims to demonstrate disapproval of US policy and actions in the Middle East, by protesting directly to US Government representation in Sydney. The intention is that this protest be made in a serious and dignified manner.
Inspiration for the event sprang from the actions of Cindy Sheehan in Texas USA. If one individual can commit so much of her time to actively protesting, each of us should be able to commit just a little.
It is to be hoped that the event will become a focus for all the diverse groups and individuals who are dissatisfied with the state of affairs in Iraq. In the main these are those who expressed open opposition to the invasion, but it should include everyone who feels that going to war was a serious error.
It is acknowledged that what is loosely described as the ‘peace movement’ is composed of a range of groups, with differing ideas that have not always been harmonious.
The event is a way for all these groups and all individuals with concern about the Iraq war (or, indeed, warfare in general) to come together and find an avenue through which to express that concern collectively.
Where the word “We” is used, the intention is that it includes all who share the feeling that going to war in Iraq was wrong. It most certainly includes those who have misgivings about the continuing occupation and fears about what might happen next.
We aim to attract sane, compassionate, thoughtful, serious-minded people, who are not afraid to speak out.
"To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men" (Abraham Lincoln)

Re: Stop the War Machine!

"He’s too dumb to eat pretzels, Apparently smart enough to fix an election, And move boldly into the White House, Though most people voted against him." -NOFX Three years ago, Bush's war machine invaded Iraq on a fabric of lies. But, in 2002, his mission of destruction was almost foiled by a tiny pretzel…

Condoleeza Rice, Sydney university and the silencing of dissent
by Usyd students Syd IMC 17/3/06
On Thursday March 16, Sydney Uni played host to Condoleezza Rice, who spoke to a crowd of select students and university administration at the Conservatorium of Music. Up to 80 students, who felt that the visit by a key supporter of the war had to be met with resistance, gathered at less than 24 hours notice to protest Rice's presence.
Things heated up when Piers Akerman, from the *Daily Telegraph*, attempted to break his way through the student line, despite the fact that many other attendants had managed to enter the Con by simply walking around the protestor's picket line. What was reported by the mainstream media as students "pushing and jostling" Akerman was in fact a case of Akerman himself using every pound to push and jostle through the students, trampling one protestor in the process.
Condoleezza Rice is one of the key figures within the Bush Administration, named by *Forbes* magazine as the most powerful woman in the world. In both her current role as US Secretary of State, and until 2005 as National Security Advisor, Rice has been directly involved and an outspoken supporter of the US invasion of Iraq. This invasion and ongoing occupation has resulted in the death of up to 180,000 innocent Iraqis, an occupation Rice insists on continuing in the name of 'democracy', despite the fact that 80 percent of Iraqis democratically demand an immediate withdrawal of US (and Australian) troops.
By 1pm on Thursday, an initial 40 students had gathered outside the Con, already cordoned off by police. Rather than the usual mix of musos and academics, the campus was instead overrun by riot police, horses, and dog squads. Numbers swelled as protestors were joined by Con students, kicked off their campus to make way for Rice.
Protestors linked arms, chanted anti-war slogans, and peacefully made it known that the uni was a student space, not one for Rice and her war-mongering agenda.
This was the excuse the police needed. They surged into protest, knocking over students, and forcing them back by 20 metres. A peaceful assembly was thus turned into a violent and intimidating police attack. Several students were reportedly punched by officers, and one female student reported being sexually harassed. 6 students were arrested, including two students from the Con, one of whom was on crutches at the protest, and the other who showed her dissent simply by dancing. How either of them was seriously meant to have 'hindered police', the offence they and the others have been charged with, appears uncertain.
