Dunnes previous international noteriety was for the Strike against Apartheid which ran for almost three years from June 1984 to April 1987. In the face of an intransigent employer, the union eventually persuaded the Irish government of the day to implement economic sanctions against the old Apartheid regime in South Africa. Now the store even refused to meet with Joanne before the sacking because she was accompanied by her Union Representative.
The sacking was reported by LabourStart http://www.labourstart.org/docs/en/000262.html and an e-mail campaign started http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/solidarityforever/show_campaign.cgi?c=66 this has resulted in over 5,000 e-mails sent by the end of last week (3rd Feb) http://www.labourstart.org/docs/en/000276.html
In Crumlin a support group has just been set up. Started at a meeting of 60 people. Pickets of the store were also organised. Elsewhere in Ireland solidarity pickets have been organised. Indymedia Ireland feature and comments have more information http://www.indymedia.ie/article/74150
