European media publish anti-Muslim cartoons: An ugly and calculated provocation

intended to insult and incite Muslim sensibilities
intended to insult and incite Muslim sensibilities

The World Socialist Web Site unequivocally condemns the publication by a series of European newspapers of defamatory cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist and killer. These crude caricatures, intended to insult and incite Muslim sensibilities, are a political provocation.

Their publication, initially by a right-wing Danish newspaper with historical ties to German and Italian fascism, was calculated to fuel anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment.

The decision of the right-wing Danish government to defend the newspaper that initially published the cartoons, and of newspapers in Norway, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Iceland and Hungary, both conservative and liberal, to reprint them has nothing to do with freedom of the press or the defense of secularism. Such claims make a mockery of these democratic principles.

The promulgation of such bigoted filth is, rather, bound up with a shift by the European ruling elites to line up more squarely behind the neo-colonial interventions of US imperialism in the Middle East and Central Asia. It is no accident that it occurs in the midst of the ongoing slaughter in Iraq, new threats against the Palestinian masses, and the preparations to launch sanctions, and eventual military aggression, against Iran.

It is, moreover, a continuation and escalation of a deliberate policy in Europe, spearheaded by the political right and aided and abetted by the nominal "left" parties, to demonize the growing Muslim population, isolate it, and use it as a scapegoat for the growing social misery affecting broad layers of the working class.

In the name of the fight against terrorism, governments throughout Europe are implementing repressive measures that target, in the first instance, Muslim and other immigrant populations, while preparing the ground for the destruction of the democratic rights of the working class as a whole. These police state preparations go hand in hand with an offensive against the jobs, wages and living standards of working people and an ever-greater concentration of wealth in the coffers of a wealthy and privileged minority at the top.

One does not have to uphold Islam, or any other religion, to sympathize with the indignation of Muslims around the world who have expressed their outrage at the racist drawings flung in their face by media outlets that claim to be defending Western secularist values against the dark hordes from the East.

On Friday, protests against the publication of the cartoons spread across the Middle East, northern Africa and Asia, with thousands demonstrating in Iraq, tens of thousands in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and some 50,000 filling a square in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. Muslims also protested in Britain and Turkey.

The events that have led up to the present confrontation make it clear that the publication of the cartoons was a political provocation. The Danish daily Jyllands-Posten, which first published twelve caricatures of Mohammad on September 30, supports the right-wing government headed by Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen--a government that includes in its coalition a rabidly anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim party.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Jyllands-Posten was infamous for its affinity for Italian fascism and the German Nazi dictatorship. In 1933, it argued for the introduction of a dictatorship in Denmark.

Last September, the newspaper asked forty cartoonists to draw images of the Prophet Muhammad, something that is proscribed by Islamic law as blasphemous. Spelling out the provocative and inflammatory aim of this exercise, the chief editor said its purpose was "to examine whether people would succumb to self-censorship, as we have seen in other cases when it comes to Muslim issues."

The newspaper proceeded to publish twelve drawings. These included a cartoon showing the Prophet Muhammad wearing a turban in the shape of a smoking bomb, another with Muhammad on a cloud in heaven telling an approaching line of suicide bombers that he had run out of virgins with which to reward them, and a third depicting the prophet grinning wildly, with a knife in his hand and flanked by heavily-veiled women.

In October, Prime Minister Rasmussen refused to meet with the ambassadors of eleven predominantly Muslim countries who had requested a meeting to discuss their objections to the cartoons. Setting the tone for the ensuing developments, Rasmussen declared that the cartoons were a legitimate exercise in press freedom, and implied that there was nothing to discuss.

The affront was stepped up when a Norwegian magazine published the drawings in January.

Denmark continued to ignore protests by Danish Muslim groups and other Muslim organizations until the end of January, when Saudi Arabia and Syria recalled their ambassadors from Denmark and the Saudi regime initiated a consumer boycott of Danish goods.

Only when the boycott spread and the Danish company Arla Foods, the second largest dairy producer in Europe, announced that its Middle Eastern sales had completely dried up, did the Danish government and Jyllands-Posten issue statements of regret, while defending the decision to publish the cartoons.

This week the simmering controversy exploded when the French newspaper France Soir republished the cartoons. Defending its printing of the drawings in an editorial on Thursday, the newspaper's editor wrote: "Enough lessons from these reactionary bigots."

Other newspapers in France, including the liberal Libération, followed suit, printing some or all of the ugly cartoons. Le Monde, for its part, ran a sketch of a man, presumably Mohammad, made up of sentences reading, "I must not draw Muhammad."

The German newspapers Die Welt, Die Tageszeitung, Tagesspiegel and Berliner Zeitung, the Dutch papers Volksrant, NRC Handelsblad and Elsevier, Italy's La Stampa and Corriere della Sera, Spain's El Periodico and two Dutch-language newspapers in Belgium were among those that published some or all of the cartoons over the past several days.

In Britain, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 all showed some of the cartoons on television news broadcasts.

An indication of the political forces and motives behind the deluge of racist caricatures was the decision of Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch parliament who has proposed a law that would ban women from wearing burqas, to post the cartoons on his web site "as a token of support to the Danish cartoonists and to stand up for free speech."

Among those European politicians and government officials who have sprung to the defense of the Danish government and the media outlets that published the images is French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy. With quintessential cynicism, the man who helped incite last year's anti-police riots in the largely Muslim immigrant suburbs of France by referring to their inhabitants as "scum" and "gangrene" has now adopted the mantle of press freedom to support yet another attack on Muslims.

The absurd attempt to give this anti-democratic assault a democratic veneer is exemplified by Sarkozy, who authored the current state of emergency that has gutted civil liberties in France. The French government of Sarkozy and President Jacques Chirac set the precedent for such anti-Muslim attacks by imposing--with the support of the Socialist and Communist parties and the "far left" Lutte Ouvrière (Workers Struggle)--a ban on Muslim girls wearing head scarves in the public schools.

This overt attack on religious freedom in general and the rights of Muslims in particular was likewise passed off as a defense of secularism and the "enlightened" values of the French Republic.

The real content of the supposed crusade for secularism and press freedom was shown in the first wave of mass deportations of French Muslims under a law championed by Sarkozy in the aftermath of last year's riots. The law provides for the summary deportation of all foreigners who are indicted--not convicted--of crimes. Hundreds of youth were arrested by Sarkozy's riot police during the disturbances, and these are now threatened with being shipped out of the country.

The new Grand Coalition government headed by Angela Merkel has likewise called for stronger measures to evict foreigners from German soil.

The foreign policy interests behind the anti-Muslim attack were indicated by the Netherlands' announcement of plans to send additional troops to help police Afghanistan for US imperialism.

On Friday, the US State Department issued a statement opposing the publication of the cartoons. "These cartoons are indeed offensive to the belief of Muslims," said a department spokesman, adding, "We fully recognize and respect freedom of the press and expression, but it must be coupled with press responsibility. Inciting religious or ethnic hatreds in this manner is not acceptable."

This intervention is entirely hypocritical, coming from a government that has sought repeatedly to muzzle the American press and has waged a brutal attack on Muslims within the US. The Bush administration has, in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, spearheaded the assault on Muslims around the world, using the so-called "war on terrorism" as the pretext.

Washington's "respect" for the beliefs of Muslims was exposed before the eyes of the world in the pictures of sadistic abuse of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, where military and intelligence officials employed tactics designed to exploit Muslim beliefs and sensibilities.

The official US response to the publication of the cartoons is largely motivated by immediate concerns over the impact the provocation could have on Washington's imperialist operations in Iraq, Iran and elsewhere.

Some who defend the publication of the cartoons claim they are examples of satire--as though crude appeals to the basest and most bigoted impulses can be equated with genuine social or cultural criticism. In fact, the images plastered on the pages of European newspapers and broadcast on television news programs have far more in common with the type of anti-Semitic caricatures made infamous by the Nazis than they do with satire.

That such outpourings can have anything to do with a struggle for secularism in opposition to religious belief is absurd. A genuine critique of religion can be conducted only on the highest intellectual level, appealing to science and reason--not ignorance and fear.

The current episode reveals the enormous dangers facing the working class from the visible decomposition of democracy in all of the capitalist countries. The promotion of anti-Muslim chauvinism, and all forms of communalist and nationalist poison, is the expression of a social system that is mired in insoluble crisis and incapable of meeting the most basic needs of the broad masses of the people.

The only antidote to such backward and reactionary politics is the development of a united movement of workers of all countries, religions and nationalities in opposition to war and in defense of democratic rights against the capitalist ruling elites and the system they uphold. The program upon which such a struggle must be based is socialist internationalism.

propaganda analysis
by Anarko Commo

propaganda analysis.

Most of us are now well aware of the caricatures of the prophet Mohammad, solicited by and published last September in the right-wing Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten. This week several publications resurrected those controversial images of Mohammad as a bomb-turbaned terrorist and another where he refuses suicide bombers entry into Heaven as "We've run out of Virgins." Then our news sources informed us that due solely to these images "outrage sweeps across the Muslim world." Such coverage has elicited miles of text and a Babel of blather denouncing those who would dare threaten OUR freedom of speech because it offends THEIR "backward" beliefs.

Like children following the Pied-Piper, many of us now lock-step behind the tune "Freedom of Expression," deaf to the fact that there was precious little of the "RAGE, FURORE, VIOLENCE, DEATH THREATS" shouting from the headlines of mainstream news sources during the first two days of those stories. Given the virtual real-world absence of actual expressions of outrage, the mainstream media's handling of this story plays like propaganda aimed at deepening the divide between "Us and Them."

On Thursday the largest number of protesters, in a world of over one-billion Muslims, was "around 300" in Pakistan. As of noon Friday, the only reported demonstration attributed to these cartoons consisted of "about 300" Indonesians, which, somehow, Reuters viewed as meriting the headline "Uproar over Images of Mohammad Spreads across Asia." Now, self-righteous and xenophobic fires fanned by such hyperbolic headlines, the fires have begun in earnest as people of the East and West glower at the imagined Other shrieking, "How could they!"

The current coverage of this act of "freedom of expression" and the Muslim response is further demoralizing and undermining the anti-war movement as oil-rich Iran gets hauled towards the Security Council, Bush uses the State of the Union Address to shore up waning support for the "War on Terror" and Rumsfeld calls upon the world to unite as, "a war has been declared on all of our nations" by "Islamic militants" intent on creating "a global extremist empire."

Now come on, Osama bin Laden is so far off the map he cannot be found. And, as for Iran, well yes, their smiley President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad does sound terribly threatening in the press coverage he's getting; but then, he's been elected by a nation who feels terribly threatened thanks to the gusher of blood and misery unleashed in neighbouring Iraq and Afghanistan ever since Bush-n-Company came sniffing around for oil, the geo-political leverage it insures and an ongoing excuse to keep tax-payers funding their filthy rich defence contractor and clean-up-the-mess we-made pals.

Moreover, this hyped-up coverage serves to distract (if not recruit) freedom of expression advocates from their struggle with the perceived enemy within--i.e., Western governments intent on using the "War on Terror" as a pretext for spying on and incarcerating citizens of foreign countries as well as their own, and, it may also result in diverting attention from government attempts to monitor and limit freedom of speech as well as from the numerous scandals besetting the Bush Administration.

Well, back to those cartoons…and the coverage we're getting: By focusing on isolated expressions of anger and by describing these instances as pandemic, the media is force-feeding its viewers with the Neo-Con's "Clash of Civilizations" thesis and thereby spreading its nefarious "WE--the free, democratic, good, mature and civilized" against "THEM--the freedom-hating, despotic, evil, childlike and barbaric" world-view.

When an entire people are subsumed into this thesis of irreconcilable difference, alarm bells should thunder. One commentator on a British TV news report went so far as to describe Islam as a "virus that requires a cure." As for the Yahoo Message Boards, a cacophony arose from the featured articles, many calling for nuking the lands of Islam into a "sea of glass" and applying the "Final Solution" to Arabs in the US and Europe. What we are witnessing is a further marginalization of the marginalized, an increased bullying of the bullied.

According to Islam, the crafting of images of Mohammad is the height of blasphemy. The way it was done, repeated and then celebrated is akin to incinerating Holy-of-Holies in public while dancing around the bonfires jeering and threatening Jews. And, who, with open eyes and ears, has not heard an echo of the Nazi's assessment that Jews behave "like a nation within a nation;" but; now; it comes from our media, our politicians, our family and friends, when they refer to the Islamic problem.

As for those leaders of Muslim nations who have condemned these caricatures, what's the big deal? They must state, when compelled, that these images are offensive to Muslims. Our own leaders are often quick to decry art and statements offending Christian and Jewish sensibilities--e.g., Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ" and the recent imprisonment of David Irving for Holocaust denial.

Most Middle Eastern rulers rise by force and/or maintain their regime through force--the source of which is largely supplied by the arms and military training industries of the West. Several Arab political analysts have interpreted the condemnation expressed by the region's politicos as having much to do with their attempt to keep power. Popular anger has been focused on the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan; but, with these cartoons, regional leaders have a paper-tiger to publicly stab, and thereby show solidarity with their people without risking the ire of their foreign power-base.

What is cause for real outrage is how the Western media also appears enthusiastic about making a storm-in-a-tea-cup of the comprehensible reaction by a small number of Muslims. Doing so, given the human catastrophe visited upon Iraq by the self-proclaimed "civilized world" and the subsequent anguish and humiliation experienced by Muslims, will likely exacerbate this situation, as the past 24-hours is making worrisomely evident.

Our "free-press" is currently offering neither context nor analysis when addressing Muslim reactions to these caricatures. The coverage of what had been tiny isolated protests and threats of violence has been anything but responsible. As such, these reports serve only to stoke the flames of hatred while keeping us in the dark. Our "free-press" is selling-out its stated mission, and its public, most cheaply.

The context is a long history of invasion, occupation, careless killing, intensive pillaging, oppression, humiliation and the subsequent radicalization of many people in the Middle East. Presenting the public outcry of a few hundred Muslims as indicative of a billion people spread over dozens of nations only deepens an already profound sense of divide between "Us and Them." To do so is not merely sensationalist and irresponsible; it's akin to a crime against truth, justice and humanity.

The cat

The cat always scratches back.

Always use your communication by passing on complements or otherwise constructive feedback if you can otherwise you'll just lose friends and allies.

If you choose otherwise politically, out of spite of or just because you're bored then you open the door.

Playing with others emotions is not good because it causes anguish and retribution.

Defending oneself requires no attack.

But do not scare.

Take two steps back - not one step back because your opponent can still reach you with a kick if you only take one step back.

Then just step around the problem - move to the other side. The Sun and the moon.

Time heals as well.

That way you get more information.

Your thinking level goes up and emotional level comes down.

You don't underestimate your opponent either.

How come those people just get hot headed?

Perhaps continued provocation has led to boiling point amongst some Muslims.

Provocation has its limitation. It can be of use in finding out the truth for instance.

Tolerance also has its limitation and some do better than others.

Danish, Swedish and Chilean embassy burns
by westener

Today the Danish, Swedish and Chilean embassy building in Damascus was overrun by a mob and set fire to over the publication of cartoons.

An angry mob, who seem to have not been stopped by police, have set fire to the shared embassy building of 3 countries; Denmark, Sweden and Chile. All this in protest against some cartoons which were published by a Danish newspaper (i.e. none of the governments involved).

You are guilty too

05.02.2006 11:30

Since the muslims seem to think that we are all guilty of what a newspaper that I have never bought in my life publishes, that makes the writer of the article guilty of racism too.

It seems sometimes muslims have a problem making a difference between a country and a newspaper, just like some have a problem making a difference between Bin Laden and the Imam.

Freedom of Speech

05.02.2006 14:36

I wondered how long it would take the left to begin trying to find blame in the media for attempting to assert freedom of speech. The protests in the muslim world have been over-represented, and you can either take the view that the media is trying to 'divide and rule', or the view that it's lazy, distant journalism. Either way, I consider the right of the media to broadcast these cartoons as sacrosanct as that of the muslim population to protest against them and to boycott the nations which they consider guilty, even though i think it's idiotic. Any time Jack Straw condemns something, you know it's good

when many words are used to hide simple conclusions

05.02.2006 15:56

When Hitler's people ran their campaign of anti-jewish propaganda, he had his intellectuals publically mock the jews for having such 'thin-skins', thus allowing ANOTHER layer of the onion of anti-jewish propaganda to be revealed. It's an old 'bully' trick.

THEREFORE, mock intellectual discussion generates new anti-muslim propaganda today, regardless of its intent. The ONLY thing that matters is the intent behind the recent program.

Blair has launched OPERATION 'THE ETERNAL MUSLIM' for the same reason that dictators bent on the destruction of another people always do, to allow those people to be exterminated more easily.

Sorry, have I made this too simple for you. Do I offend the concept that a truth not backed up with pages of tightly printed crap in a broadsheet cannot be significant? But why do broadsheets exist in the first place? Here's a clue- if you make a person believe that he is 'out of the loop' for reasons of inadequacy, that person will stupidly and willingly allow others to think on his/her behalf. Why do you think so many British politicians are lawyers?

Blair is frightened of only ONE type of Human, that person who will immediately dismiss the waffle and the pages of written crap, and return immediately back to the point. Hitler ALSO operated in a land of broadsheets, lawyers, and civil servants. He also insisted that you could say NOTHING about his plans until YOU were au fait with the vast sophistication of his argument as put forward in MILLIONS of words.

HOW MANY WORDS DID YOU READ TO FORM A SOLID CONCLUSION ABOUT HITLER AND HIS ACTIONS? Today, you would laugh at the suggestion that ANY justification for Nazi Germany could be found in the vast volumes of garbage produced by that state, and its press. Instead, you would say Hitler demonised the jews to make it easier to get people to persecute them, and Hitler waged AGGRESSIVE WARS that are evil by definition.

Blair is in the BEFORE stage, whereas HITLER is quite clearly in the AFTER stage of Human history. However, YOUR analysis can be done exactly the same as with Hitler now, by considering Blair's actions so far (and the words used to justify them- all proven lies), the actions he has promised to carry out in the future, and the conditioning of people he MUST achieve to make those actions possible.

Blair has launched OPERATION 'THE ETERNAL MUSLIM' for the same reason that dictators bent on the destruction of another people always do, to allow those people to be exterminated more easily.

There, I've repeated myself, but why are you trying so hard to avoid this truth? One sentence, one simple truth. Is Blair about to kill millions of christians? NO! Is Blair about to kill millions of jews? NO! Is Blair about to kill millions of Iranians? YES! that's the well stated plan, as publically exposed as Hitler's promise to do for the Russians in Mein Kampf. So who is it that Blair needs to demonise? 2+2=?

2+2 eh? I wouldn't answer that question myself, until I'd read page after page on the subject in The Times or The Guardian or The Telegraph. I mean what sort of fool would commit to an answer for such a complex question as 2+2 before allowing ones betters to fully explore the complex issues. Their many, many, many, many words do exist for a reason you know.

2+2? Some idiots would just rush in and say 4. Yes, I know it was 4 yesterday, and i know it will be 4 tomorrow, but how can I be certain it's 4 today. What if I am wrong. What if my arrogance causes me to miss yet another discussion about the subject on Channel 4 news, or Newsnight, and like an idiot I jump to a conclusion based on the fact that the answer has always been 4. If it was THAT obvious, why would the papers and the news-programs spend so much time discussing it?

Religion as a choice

05.02.2006 17:43

Religion is a choice, and thus must be treated as another ideology in debates. If the cartoons were suggesting that, say, people from Islamic countries, or Arabia were some how sub-human, I would be on the streets protesting, as would many who visit this website. But this is an attack on an ideology, not a race. Another thing - these cartoons are a great deal less inflammatory than Jerry Springer the Opera, but the left media and the establishment were a great deal more protective of that than these cartoons. The Independent On Sunday today comes out against the cartoons, saying that those of us defending free speech in this debate are using the bully tactic. This is balls. Religion is not the same as nationality, ethnicity, because of the element of choice, and the fact that it's an ideology means that it should be part of the permanent battle of ideas. Those fighting against that happening to Islam are unwittingly leading to that debate.
