Activists shame John Anthony

On Tuesday January 31st '06, activists from Bath & Bristol took to the
streets to protest against several clothes stores which sold real
animal fur. The group made their presence known, with banners,
leaflets, whistles, air horns and a megaphone. The Bath Cronicle
arrived to report the actions in their newspaper, and the police also
turned up to moan about the noise.
6 out of 7 shops decided to stop all fur sales and told the group they
are starting a 'no-fur policy'.
Only John Anthony continues to sell real rabbit fur, and so they can
look forward to lots more protests at their stores in Bristol, Bath,
Bournemouth, Swindon and Oxford, in the near future.

Surely the local groups should be backing up SPEAK / SHAC? I know fur is an important issue, but surely the strength of the movement is being diluted.
Please discuss....If you feel I am right or wrong I would like to hear your views.

I do agree that there are important battles ahead of us, and ones that we engaged in at the moment. However, most of us on the fur demo were active in moblising transport for the most recent oxford lab demo and plan to moblise coaches to the upcoming demos. Of course, as an anarchist, I see battles that need to be fought in all sectors of society, some local, some national and some global. The fur demo was suggested on the friday, and three days later we had 15 people out on a weekday for a successful demo that helped wipe fur off the shelves of Bath, with the exeption of 1 shop, which we are organisising against as we speak. I see no harm in doing what we can to alleviate the suffering of animals at a time when none of us (as we are mostly skint and carless) would have been powerless to protest at the lab. We cannot rest in our struggle, and we cannot proritize one animal over another, as all tortured animals must be liberated. I will personally be throwing myself into the fight against the Oxford lab, as I have thrown myself into the fight against capitalism, fascism and womans oppression. At times when i cannot practically confront my biggest enemy, i will busy myself chipping away at other evils.
So, yes it is vital that we shut the lab, huntingdon, and numerous other torture chambers, but just as vital that we wipe fur off the shelves, and numerous other issues that need to be addressed simeltaneously to ensure a better future for us and tha animals.

Well its up to you to decide wether these tactics are any good. but the results stand for themselves. 6 out of 7 shops we targetted in bath now dont sell fur. Fur is a real issue and its scummy little shops like these that are keepin demand and keeping the fur industry going.
I see your point about supporting big groups like speak and shac.
However BARC do support speak and SHAC a hell of a lot.
Currently 3 of our activists have been overseas twice in the last 2 weeks for some SHAC global action.
BARC activists myself and somebody else also went down to oxford a few weeks back and stayed for a length of days supporting the campaign.
A lot more is being organised for these campaigns like SPEAK , SHAC as well as sequani labs and regular hunt sabbing.
We feel these shops are very acheivable goals so to simply ignore it would be silly.
But yeh your point is taken and we're already doing what you suggest :)

In the UK alone, well over a thousand million animals are killed by the meat industry each year. Surely this is a far more urgent issue than thousands of animals being killed by vivisectors...?
Today we did two AR street stalls in Bristol and we do this several times each week; a member of the public told me today that he's stopped eating meat because of literature I gave him a week ago, and people tell us this very often. Street stalls can have just as much effect as a demo in Oxford, as we look around to see an ever more veggie public and decent vegan food becoming more widely available. It's certainly not as glamorous as attending an Oxford march and scuffling with the police, and you're not likely to get much credit for it, but it saves countless animals.
Most activists who attended the fur protests in Bath this week are full-time activists, covering numerous animal and non-animal campaigns. Each week I hunt sab twice, organise and attend local demos, do several street stalls, and a lot more besides. And yes, i've been to Oxford!
As stated by a fellow BARC activist, and hunt saboteur above, the victories we achieved on Tuesday were very easy. If everyone did it then we could stop fur creeping onto our streets once and for all. 40 million animals are killed each year by the fur industry, again this is probably far more deaths those in labs, and we can stop it just like that.
I hope can all continue to do whatever actions we fell to be most effective, but also support others with their actions for a better world.

His/her main aim is still, as has been in the past, to discourage local AR campaigns in favour of solely adopting the bigger campaigns ie SPEAK/SHAC.
Whilst both the above campaigns are highly honourable to support, much work needs doing in our localities in favour of the animals.
The above poster's all admit that they fully support both SPEAK/SHAC hands on. So does every other true AR group in the UK come to that.
Don't let people like 'Vegan Nation' try and guilt trip you about supporting your own local AR campaigns. They are all as important as each other, you already know this.
