The SHORTWAVE REPORT 1/13/06 ¡LISTEN GLOBALLY!

Dan Roberts | 13.01.2006 00:55 | Analysis | World

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files- broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. China, Netherlands, Spain, Cuba, and Russia.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (January 13) is up at the website
in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:00)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, Spanish National Radio, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- Incidents of bird flu slowly spread around the planet, with new human deaths in Turkey, and a weaker strain that has emerged in Japan. The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and the Climate has opened in Australia- a meeting for 6 nations that refuse to ratify the Kyoto Protocols.
From NETHERLANDS- Environmentalists and nations who have implemented the Kyoto Protocols are very critical of the Asia-Pacific Climate meeting- they criticize that it is a gathering of the worst polluters with the manufacturers of nuclear and coal-fired powerplants.
From SPAIN- Bolivia's new President Morales went to China to request help in developing their energy industry. Brazil has paid off its debt to the IMF, joining Argentina who paid them off last week. Venezuela's Chavez offered Bolivia his army if the US attempts to overthrow the new government. Spanish courts are accusing an Argentine military officer of genocide in the infamous "disappearances." The courts are also considering charges against 7 Chinese leaders for genocide against the Tibetan people. After Iran removed seals on its nuclear development project, Tony Blair wants to refer Iran to the UN Security Council for sanctions.
From CUBA- A retired British Army General has called for the impeachment of Tony Blair, for the invasion and occupation of Iraq. US occupation forces blasted their way into the home in Bagdhad of a young award-winning journalist, who is working with the British paper The Guardian and a British news program called Dispatches. Venezuela is expanding its program of reduced oil prices for the poor in the US.
From RUSSIA- Venezuela's President Chavez is worried that the US may attack his country soon. The Ukrainian government voted to sack its cabinet following the gas price crisis with Russia. Amnesty International has gathered more information about torture in the US prisons in Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere. The Swiss Special services intercepted evidence that the CIA has been holding uncharged prisoners for torture in secret prisons in Europe.

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm (PST) on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PST)
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- (13.3MB)

--"The biggest part of reporting the truth is the news agenda itself. What we choose to put on the air, what we think is a page one story, what our priorities are. I would not be fooled by the old myth that reporting is about objectivity. Deciding what is news is the most subjective of acts and it is probably the most important thing that we do."
-Carl Bernstein

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)
