From NETHERLANDS- Israeli jets are dropping leaflets over Beirut denouncing Hezbollah rebels, creating fear that Israel may be preparing to attack Lebanon. After years of fighting, Nepal's Maoist rebels say that they are willing to end their insurgency, join mainstream politics to end the monarchy and create democracy.
From CHINA- Russian President Putin has announced the building of an oil pipeline to supply Asian countries, though the territorial dispute with Japan over a chain of islands remains unresolved. Russia and Japan have never signed a formal peace treaty following WW2.
From CUBA- Venezuela will ship discounted home heating oil to charities and low income residents of Massachusetts, in a deal arranged by a congressman and Hugo Chavez. Then a Viewpoint on the criticism the Bush administration expressed toward the meeting between the Argentine President Kirchner and Hugo Chavez- this follows their strong rejection of the FTAA and their further development of the South American trade bloc, Mercosur.
From RUSSIA- Al-Jazeera says the US is blocking an international investigation into the recently discovered Iraqi prisons whose inmates have been tortured and never charged. The US is developing more military bases near the Russian border, and the potential threat to Russia has been heatedly discussed among their citizens and politicians. The US now has 1500 military bases outside its own territory.
