leila shénne | 05.11.2005 21:03 | Analysis | Social Struggles | World

Last night more than 500 cars burned in Paris. Schools, bus depots, police stations, companies and so on were set on fire ALL OVER FRANCE.

This night another 900 cars burned. More companies more states´institutions burned... police is attacked everywhere.

FACTS, NUMBERS AND HISTORY OF THE REBELLION ON:

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Paris_suburb_riots

BACKGROUND INFORMATIONS:

Racism and Repression Explode in Week of Uprisings

North Africans living and working in Paris have been pushed into ghettoized suburbs of Paris (banlieue), where the state has withdrawn education, health, and other services, while increasing police presence, checkpoints, raids on sans-papiers and levels of oppression in general. This week the suburbs have exploded.

The trigger came on Thursday, October 27th, 2005, as a group of 10 highschool kids were playing soccer in the Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois. When police arrived to do ID checks, the kids ran away and hid, because some of them had no ID. Three of the children hid in an electrical transformer building of EDF and were electrocuted. Two of them, Ziad Benn (17) and Banou Traoré (15), died; the third, Metin (21), was severely injured.

On Saturday morning, 1000 joined in a march organised by religious associations and mosques in Clichy-sous-Bois. Representatives of the Muslim community appealed for calm and marchers wore T-shirts saying mort pour rien ("dead for nothing"). The mayor of Clichy, Claude Dilain, called for an enquiry into the deaths of the two boys. All eyes were on Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy. The response? As people were gathering in the mosques for the Night of Destiny, the most sacred night in the month of Ramadan, a night people usually spent at the mosque, the empty streets of the Cité du Chêne Pointu filled with about 400 CRS militant riot police and gendarmes, blocking off the neighborhood. Yet very few people allowed themselves to be provoked into breaking the sanctity of this night, despite racist insults from the police.

On Sunday, however, provocation turned into outrage as the women's prayer room at de Bousquets mosque was teargassed by police. As people stumbled out gasping for air, the policemen called the women "whores", "bitches" and other insults.

Ever since that night, Clichy-sous-Bois has been burning, with the insurrection spreading on Monday to Seine-Saint-Denis and on Tuesday night (November 1st) to nine other Parisian suburbs. A week after the death of the two boys, the uprising is spreading throughout France -- to Dijon, Bouches-du-Rhone and Rouen.

In a press conference held on Monday, community-based activists named the causes of the continuing unrest: "Clichy is one of the poorest municipalities in France and community groups have less and less money to work with." Things are tense as the press conference draws to a close: young people share their stories, women explain what they experienced and saw first hand. A common theme in all these accounts is anger at the police, who are carrying out more and more foolish - and often illegal - "muscular" interventions, and at the authorities in the ministry who are not condemning the gas attack against the mosque.

There was a consensus that, in order to calm things down, the police should leave the area... instead, Minister Sarkozy has announced a "zero tolerance" policy, labelling the suburban youth as "scum" and vowing to "clean out" troubled suburbs. Sarkozy's position has divided the cabinet, with Prime Minister de Villepin apparently rebuking Mr Sarkozy...

It seems to me the french government want to provoke a race riot, and have wanted to for a while. Why? The disturbances will have, in the minds of the majority of white frech voters, shown that immigration does not work and will be an excuse for the government to come in with strong anti immigration measures and even stronger anti terrorist laws.

yeah right

let's get a few things in perspective

a few weeks ago the french 'introduced' a new anti terror law
like here in the uk it had NOT GONE DOWN WELL

--------------------------------------------------------------
France plans new anti-terror law

26 October 2005 - The French government has backed a draft anti-terror bill proposing more powers to track suspects. The bill recommends increased use of video surveillance in stations and airports, and tougher sentences.

A BBC correspondent says Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has been keen to increase the powers available to the authorities since the London bombings.

French President Jacques Chirac supported the proposed bill saying that the country faced "a real threat". But there has been some criticism from civil liberties groups who have questioned the measures' effectiveness. Last month, Mr Sarkozy described the threat of a terrorist attack on Paris as "very high".

Telephone records

The BBC's Alasdair Sandford, in Paris, says Mr Sarkozy has been impressed by the success of closed-circuit footage in identifying the London suspects, and the new French measures provide for greater use of video surveillance in stations, airports and other public places.

Telephone operators would have to keep records for a year to help investigators' inquiries, and internet cafes would have to keep more detailed information.

The maximum prison sentence for associating with a terrorist organisation would be raised from 20 to 30 years. The bill is due to be debated in the French parliament next month

Civil rights group attacks tough new anti-terror law
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kim Willsher Thursday October 27, 2005 The Guardian - The French interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, was accused yesterday of attacking civil liberties after unveiling tough anti-terrorism laws that will increase video surveillance of the public, provide greater official access to phone and internet records and set longer jail terms.

The National Commission for Information and Liberty Clauses said there was a "serious risk to individuals' freedom" in the new law, which aims to pre-empt terror attacks by charging suspects with "intention" rather than definite action.

The bill will be put to the national assembly on November 22.

Three men arrested in London may have been part of a plot to blow
up the U.S. Capitol and the White House
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WEB EXCLUSIVE By Mark Hosenball Updated: 6:07 p.m. ET Nov. 4, 2005

Nov. 4, 2005 - Investigators in the United States and Britain are urgently investigating information suggesting that a group of terrorism suspects recently arrested in the London area may have been plotting to blow up Washington landmarks using homemade bombs. Counterterrorism officials, who asked to remain anonymous because the investigation was continuing, said the suspects’ possible targets included the White House and the U.S. Capitol complex.

Investigators appear to be uncertain about how far the plotting against Washington targets had advanced before the arrests. While British officials call the investigation active and urgent, U.S. officials, while acknowledging they were aware of the possible threats against the White House and Capitol Hill, said they were not sure whether the targets were part of an imminent plot or was more bravado among Islamic militants. Officials in both countries are concerned, however, that the suspects could be part of a terror network stretching from the United States to Britain to Bosnia

Denmark's detainees about to plan terror attack somewhere in Europe
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The arrest of four Muslim men in Denmark this week is connected to those of three people arrested in Bosnia on terrorism charges earlier this month, Danish police said on Friday.
The arrest of four Muslim men in Denmark this week is connected to those of three people arrested in Bosnia on terrorism charges earlier this month, Danish police said on Friday.
Danish police arrested four Muslim men aged between 16 and 20 years on Thursday under an anti-terrorism law after being tipped-off by a Balkan country. A court decided they should stay in custody until Nov. 16.
"I can confirm there is a connection to the arrests in Bosnia," a police spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday.
"We have reasons to believe that they were about to plan a terror attack some place in Europe," Detective Chief Superintendent Sten Skovgaard said.
500 U.S. troops
Skovgaard said the possible attack could have been aimed at Denmark, which has more than 500 troops serving with U.S.-led forces in Iraq.
Bosnian police arrested on Oct. 20 a Swede, a Turk and a Bosnian on terrorism charges and confiscated explosives and weapons.
Danish police said the Swede and the Turk were living in Sweden and Denmark respectively and that the Bosnian has been released.
Swedish tabloid Expressen said an 18-year old Swedish man arrested in Bosnia was planning a suicide action against the British or U.S. embassy in Sarajevo. Sweden's security police SAPO confirmed that a Swede has been arrested in Bosnia on terrorism charges.

LOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
---------------------------------------------
Tighter anti-terror laws
---------------------------------------------
Denmark's Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, describing the arrest of the four men as "shocking", said his centre-right government was ready to tighten anti-terror laws.
"We will take the necessary steps to prevent terror in Denmark," he told DR radio. "We have already allocated more resources to the police and will not hesitate to take further steps."
The government is expected to release a report on the level of the Nordic country's terror preparedness in the coming weeks.
Denmark, which also has troops in Afghanistan and is a firm ally of the United States, has bolstered security measures after four British Muslims killed 56 people in London in suicide bombing attacks on July 7.

London bombings

The Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, which has claimed responsibility for several European attacks including the London bombings, singled out Denmark as a potential target in July.
However, security experts have discredited many of the group's claims, and U.S. officials say its links to al Qaeda are unclear.

Danish police described the four men as introverted and fervent believers in Islam. One of the four is a Danish citizen.

In September, Danish police charged a Moroccan-born Danish Muslim with inciting fellow Muslims to a holy war. He was the first person to be charged under a Danish anti-terrorism law enacted in 2002 after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. The law forbids incitement of terrorism or offering advice to terrorists.

The riots are the result of mindless evil hooligans!

06.11.2005 12:14

The riots are the result of mindless evil criminal hooligans! If they have grievances then there are the proper democratic routes and channels to air those grievances! Old age pensioners are amongst the most marginalised and dissaffected in society yet old age pensioners don't riot, take drugs or run amok! The people taking part in the violence and rioting are nothing more than criminals!

The Answer

06.11.2005 12:17

The answer is simple :
have no laws to break
allow free imigration
Turf out people who have worked for homes in nice areas and give them to refugees from every corner of the globe, including where you live.
Give all natives tents and send them to live on un inhabital moor land.
and the problem wil be solved, no more riots for a while.....until the efforts of the native workers is lost...
the food in the shops runs out, the water stops flowing and water born disease kills millions, infestation takes over.
Then the country's that refugees flee from will offer a better standard of living than we have, so nobody will come here and riot.
Problem solved !

I am a genius

They obviously thought u were too mad even for them.

Do u even know what a hooligan does? A hooligan will go out looking for violence, a fight some1 to hit for no other reason but hate. He/she wont do it once a year or once in a blue moon, itl be constant every day or 2 every week. Whats happening in Paris hasnt been seen in many many years. Riots are a usual phaenomenon that occur when a group of people is demanding certain rights and/or things they feel they deserve. It happened in 1917 in Russia twice, In the USA during the 50's 60's and 70's in the UK during the 80's. Obviously your life has been that of a person who has never lived in poverty in atrocious conditions and with a family to feed. Just this summer immigrants in France died from a fire that started in one of the many confined spaces they keep them in. With no fire exits or safety equipment. These peolpe contribute to the economy, they work hard and capitlism just plays its usual game of 'work your ass of son ive got money to make out of it' game. Is a riot the right thing?? can theydo anything else? do they have any alternative parties to vote for? Or did u think we lived in a democracy?? News Flash: 3 parties that look the same, talk the same and act the same is not a democracy.

Get educated or kill yourself

I'd love to get educated, but the rioters burned down my school...

"Whats happening in Paris hasnt been seen in many many years"

Yeah, normally the heroic rebel kids on Paris's sink estates are too busy gang raping each other to bother burning any cars.

Heaven forbid we see more than one viewpoint. Are we saying that IMC should censor posts, now?
