In the week preceeding the start of protests against DSEi, europes largest arms fair, 10,000 newpapers about the issue were printed and distributed.

The 8 page paper was delivered to an estimated 90% of streets in the Canning Town, Customs House and Beckton directly north of the Excel Centre in Docklands which hosts the event.

You can download the paper here as a PDF. It is approx 9mb

At the time of writing, few paper copies are still available at LARC, FREEDOM, 56A, RAMPART and at the DISARM DSEi CONVERGENCE CENTRE.

If you happen to be at the convergence centre, please consider taking a bundle of papers and delivering them or handing them out during protest during DSEi. (a map of streets which have been done is on the wall above the stack of papers)

Why only locally

05.10.2005 11:34

Why deliver the papers only near to the conference? Do you think the only people who might have opinions live nearby? Do you think the people who live nearby should have strong opinions against the conference - I imagine your paper wasn't exactly partisan.

What conference?

The paper cost just under 1,000 pounds to print and most of this was raised by donations (leaving the people producing the paper slightly out of pocket).

The paper was conceived and writen as an outreach tool specifically for the locals and was never intended to be a paper for wider distribution (although it did go to various social centres around the country and even ended up in Spain for some strange reason).

The reason for addressing the locals specifically is that it was felt important to inform people of what to expect and explain the motives behind any actions that might cause them inconvenience. It was obviously also hoped that those outraged by the arms trade would join the protests or campaign in some way to prevent future arms fairs taking place at ExceL.

If we had had 10,000 pounds available we would have printed 200,000 instead of 10,000 copies and distributed it much wider. However we would still have concentrated on East London.
