Solitary confinement for Ugandan hunger Striker

Jason N. Parkinson | 14.08.2005 14:53 | Migration | World

In recent minutes officers at Yarl's Wood detention centre have tried to put Ugandan hunger striker Harriet Anyangokolo into solitary confinement.

As I write this C has blockaded herself into her room.

Yarl's Wood detention officers are at a stand-off with the other Ugandan hunger strikers as they formed a human shield to prevent C being moved to the isolation ward.

C is also being threatened with removal to Colnbrook detention centre and the Home Office plans to remove from the UK on Tuesday August 16.

Since the hunger strike started over three weeks ago, C has deteriorated rapidly, her TB that was never treated properly in Yarl's Wood has become reactive.

Due to her current health situation, and the amount of stress and emotional disruption, there are grave concerns about the health of C.

Sad

14.08.2005 17:34

Its a very sad situation with the hunger-strikers.
I doubt if they'll receive any support from us as the same people always dis-respected activists when called upon to show solidarity for actions like  http://alluta.org/html/?page_id=3 etc.

infact on one action, We were only two of us(one ugandan anarchist and English socialist) inspite of informing and begging thousand of ugandans living in London to spare ony 2hrs on a saturday afternoon for a demo, the reason given was that "its not their problem". I'm sure they're not suffering like those kids in Northern uganda!

correction

Correction to the bi-line. it was not Harriet, but the detainee known as C, refered to in previous article.

Jason

More on this as soon as I know.

Ugandan hunger strikers safe for now

14.08.2005 18:23

The custody staff have pulled back and left C and the other hunger strikers alone for the time being, but are said to be under close watch.

For now the pressure is off C, but she still faces deportation on Tuesday. If she is returned to Uganda she will be immediately imprisioned and face possible torture and execution for her participation with the Ugandan opposition.

Please assist in any way you can to make sure this does not happen. MP Jeremy Corbyn is aware of this situation, as is Alistair Burt, MP for Bedford. Please do what you can to make sure C and others in similar circumstances do not get sent to their deaths by our intollerant and uncaring government and Home Office.

officers are leaving her alone at present

but fellow Ugandan women are keeping watch outside C's room. Please send messages of support for the women who are being very courageous in the face of intimidation by detention centre management and staff to Tony McNulty and Alistair Burt, the MP for the Yarl's Wood area who is a Conservative but has been very supportive of women in Yarl's Wood and outspoken on detention and the deportation regime.
