Islamic nations stop condemnation of suicide bombers

Ismael | 01.08.2005 15:02 | World

IHEU representative David Littman tried to deliver a prepared text in the names of three international NGOs – the Association for World Education, the Association of World Citizens and the IHEU – but was blocked by the "heavy-handed intervention" of Islamic representatives of the panel.

Littman said that after repeated interruptions, he was unable to complete his speech.

The Muslims members said they saw the text as an attack on Islam.

The IHEU argued Littman's speech was a report on recent critical comment on Islamist extremism by a number of notable Muslim writers.

The intent was for the U.N. Human Rights Commission "to condemn calls to kill, to terrorize or to use violence in the name of God or any religion."

The text referred to recent decisions by high-ranking Muslim clerics to confirm that those who carry out suicide bombings remain Muslims and cannot be treated as apostates.

A Saudi cleric, for example, issued a fatwa saying that innocent Britons were a legitimate target for terrorist action. Also, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, dean of the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies at Qatar University, who has visited Britain, said terror attacks are permissible.

Roy Brown, president of IHEU, said the censorship is "part and parcel of the refusal by the Islamic representatives at the U.N. to condemn the suicide bombers, or to accept any criticism of those who kill innocent people in the name of God."

Many of those killed in the London bomb attacks were muslims themselves

Quote: "A Saudi cleric, for example, issued a fatwa saying that innocent Britons were a legitimate target for terrorist action. Also, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, dean of the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies at Qatar University, who has visited Britain, said terror attacks are permissible"

How can he be so stupid when many of those killed in the recent London bomb attacks were either muslims or else foreign nationals living in Britain! Doesn't he know that London is one of the most multi-racial cities on earth?

Oh and has he forgot the vast amount of aid donated by western nations to victims of last years tsumani, the majority of whose recipients were muslims. Without the billions sent in aid by western nations the death toll due to the asian tsunami would be in the millions!

Motivation

We must question why young Muslim men who have had all the advantages that Britian can offer would do such a thing. It is too simplistic to say it's all about Palestine, the invasions in Iraq or Afghanistan. I speak with Muslims, devout and near secular every day and while they are concerned about these issues they are far more concerned about the same issues as the rest of us, the NHS, Crime, Education etc.

We need to look at what is influencing these young men, for a recent project I interviewed 200 Muslim boys and girls between the ages of 15 and 21. We were seeking their views on a town centre shopping development but the local authority I was contracted to also used it as an opportunity to asertain their opinions on wider political and socio-economic issues.

I expected for example a strong dislike of the USA, this wasn't the case. Many had been there on holiday and liked the country. Some had explored joining the UK armed services giving as a reason their knowledge of Islamic culture and how it could benefit the country, something that also surprised me. Words like "nutters", "extremists" and "beardies" were used when the fundamentalist clerics were discussed. The majority only attended Mosque to please parents and felt religion irrelevant to their lives. In fact what I found was a cross section of young people that could have been any religion, any colour and background. The focus of their lives was the opposite sex, travel, getting a good job and socialising.

The people responsible for the wave of terrorism are the extremists who are using these people as cannon fodder in their quest for an Islamic world,

They Mean Well

In going out of their way to make these statements, Muslims unwittingly play into the hands of the people attempting to create the myth that "terrorism" is connected to Muslims.

This has yet to be proven in the cases of 911, Madrid, and London.

Elsewhere, Arabs are defending themselves from the Aggression of outside forces.

The IHEU is the "International Humanist and Ethical Union".
Who?
Yes, exactly. They're an NGO that was briefly fashionable in the 1970s, and that nobody's ever heard of nowadays.

They still have "consultative rights" at the UN though, and reportedly still hold lovely receptions in New York.

They held a meeting recently, and a bunch of extremist nutters turned up.

And now, over to Archie, with all of today's sport...

Put the kettle on, love.
