CAP helps stop famine in Africa : Stop being conned by free market

Tony Smuc | 10.07.2005 23:50 | G8 2005 | Analysis | Globalisation | World

The free market worjks for all industry byut not for foodm, health, educatrion and other essential opublic services food is an essential public service and needs ameasure onmf control. Where does Bob Geldof think food aid comes from? Answer he doesn't want to relaise it comes from Overproduction of food in Europe.

Why does everyone say that the EU producing cheap food for Africa causes famine Surely it stops famine and getting rid of the CAP would cause more famine aren't the euro sceptics confusing poverty with famine, when they complain the CAP stops Africa selling food to us what is the point in Africa selling food to us if they don't and have any left over and they don't get cheap food from us anymore and they have a famine.
Stop falling for right wing extremist drivel the sort of dogmatists who allowed 4 million Indians to starve to death in the British empire because the free market said the poor should not get food, and the free market dogmatism said the free market will always provide well it won’t why on earth would any country in the world provide food for starving Africans other than subsidies.
Look at the potato famine and the Indian famines, caused by the free market when they couldn't afford our food prices. how does the CAP cause famine how does making too much food cause famine.
The last time we had a free market in Britain in the days of the empire, 1940s India was exporting food while 4 million Indians starved. That is the cruelty of the free market. Why does selling food to a drought stricken country cause famine. Surely we need more food security not less especially with climate change issues.

Why is EU extremism has increased to such levels that anything the EU does is allowed to be insulted without criticism back.
Why are we becoming so ignorant that we forget this mistakes of the past the free market in CAP will not help Africans or Europeans.
Oi forgot everything Britain does it right must remember to keep taking the Tony Blair is always correct pill that all you lot take.

Because the money for the CAP food leaves Africa, making Africa as a whole poorer. Quite simple really.

Answer is basic

when we dump food on African markets at cheap prices we undercut African producers, they then go out of business, the following year when harvests come around there's no one making food, the people start dying we give them a litle bit of food and then the problem spirals downwards. We're bastards really, us and the French, and the Americans, Dutch, Germans, Spanish, everyone really

famines and free markets

Actually the Irish famine had nothing to do with free markets. It was caused by a potato disease which infected nearly all of the potato production, but Irish farmers were in most cases not allowed to grow anything else but potatoes, let alone hunt of fish. (Remember that the English still ruled Ireland at that time, and farmers were not free to make their own decisions.)
The potatoe disease turned into such a big disaster for so many people because first of all a lot of people relied on very little food variety: that's a similar situation that one now finds in a lot of African, Asian and South American countries where small scale farmers end up producing just one crop, be it rice, maize or soybeans. The diversity in food production and therefore food security has gone, mainly due to the Green Revolution and due to pressure on farmers to produce cash crops.
Irish farmers were then met by a second disaster: the wish of a lot of English landowners to use the land for sheep instead for growing crops, because with the introduction of spinning machines wool was much more valuable then grains. And the famine was a good way to get rid of unwanted tenants: not only because they simply died of hunger, but also because millions emigrated to North America.
