From NETHERLANDS- Tony Blair and George Bush announced they will soon complete a debt-relief package for the poorest nations in Africa- an analysis of how far the relief really goes. The Organization of American States rejected a US proposal to strengthen democracy by intervening in political disputes- members feared the US wanted permission to strong-arm Cuba and Venezuela.
From CUBA- First, a Viewpoint about George Bush's proposal to the OAS. Amnesty International has pointed out the US policy of labeling as terrorists all Latin Americans who promote indigenous rights and oppose the FTAA.
From SPAIN- The Bolivian President again offered to resign in the face of weeks of indigenous protest and urged early elections. The military opened fire on protesters in the capital of Ethiopia, killing at least 72 and injuring many more.
From CHINA- Tony Blair said it is essential that the US get involved in the world dialogue about climate change. Some Italian ministers called to abandon the Euro as currency after the EU Constitution was defeated in referendums in France and the Netherlands. According to polls, the majority of Americans do not believe the invasion of Iraq has made them safer from terrorism. China responded to US criticism over its military buildup.
From RUSSIA- The global expenditure on arms and defense topped a trillion dollars last year. A commentary on increasing pressure to close down the US run Guantanamo prison camp.
