The latest Shortwave Report (June 3) is up at the website
in both broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:42)
This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- French and Dutch voters both rejected the European Constitution- what was behind the vote and what does it portend for the EU? What affect will Chirac's choice for a new Prime Minister, a leader in the anti-Iraq war movement, have on sentiment in Europe? Paul Wolfowitz began a 5 year term as President of the World Bank- many fear he will use the bank to spread American values and political ties.
From NETHERLANDS- Kofi Annan has urged world leaders to make real efforts to stop nuclear arms proliferation, after the NPT conference ended last week with zero results. Is the world accepting the notion of uncontrolled nuclear weapons development?
From CUBA- Demonstrations continued to swell in Bolivia over the week, with people demanding the nationalization of petroleum resources. A viewpoint on recent revelations about Plan Condor, which destroyed tens of thousands of lives in S America in the 1970's. Then a Viewpoint on Amnesty International's criticism of the US run prison camp at Guantanamo Bay.
From RUSSIA- First a commentary on Amnesty International's report on Guantanamo Bay, which they had described as "America's gulag." Then a commentary comparing the stress on soldiers fighting in Baghdad with the stress of soldiers fighting the IRA in Ireland- both battles result in many psychologically damaged veterans and in fights that never end.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm (PST) on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)-

--"The biggest part of reporting the truth is the news agenda itself. What we choose to put on the air, what we think is a page one story, what our priorities are. I would not be fooled by the old myth that reporting is about objectivity. Deciding what is news is the most subjective of acts and it is probably the most important thing that we do."
