The SHORTWAVE REPORT 5/6/05 ¡LISTEN GLOBALLY!

Dan Roberts | 05.05.2005 23:09 | Analysis | Globalisation | World

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files- broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, Russia, China, and Cuba.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (May 6) is up at the website
in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:58)

This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, the Voice Of Russia, China Radio International, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From NETHERLANDS- As Turkey moves toward membership in the EU, the question of the genocide of Armenians must be addressed. A week before G Bush arrives in the Netherlands, protesters are preparing for the event. By the time you hear this, the election in England will be over- but one of the important questions raised is whether or not Tony Blair has led England in world affairs as a "force for good."
From RUSSIA- A commentary on a court ruling in the US allowing the publication of photos of coffins containing dead US soldiers from Iraq. Tony Blair has issued secret instructions to modernize Britain's nuclear arsenal, including a nuclear enrichment program in New Mexico. Germans have again demanded that the US remove tactical nuclear weapons from their nation.
From CHINA- At the opening of the conference on the Nuclear nonproliferation treaty, Kofi Annan called on all nations to restrain the nuclear threat. The EU is moving closer to lifting the ban on arms sales to China. China condemned a statement by Japan's Foreign Minister labelling Taiwan as part of a security alliance with the US and Japan. Iran continues to say that it is legitimate to produce enriched uranium.
From CUBA- US corporations Haliburton and Baechtel are making a fortune on the invasion and occupation of Iraq. The US plans to transfer prisoners at Guantanamo Bay to Afghanistan before allowing human rights investigators to see the facility. Then a Viewpoint on the protection the US has silently granted to terrorist Luis Posada Carriles.

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm (PST) on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better- Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)-
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative-
I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)

--The dangers of national divinity scarcely require explanation. Japan went to war in the 1930s convinced, like George Bush, that it possessed a heaven-sent mission to "liberate" Asia and extend the realm of its divine imperium. It would, the fascist theoretician Kita Ikki predicted, "light the darkness of the entire world". Those who seek to drag heaven down to earth are destined only to engineer a hell.
